Northern pike?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You need to look for a Muskie they are a cousin of the northern pike and i have heard they can stand higher temperatures. I have also seen them in tanks at some of our LFS in warm tanks.

nah i think ill try for a grass, redfin or chain pike... Esox americanus sp, grass pikes are found in north america only and max out 20"ish there is also a subspecies of Esox americanus sp called redfins after their red fins...... there are also chain pikes: Esox niger sp. that max at around 24"... that about all i could find... i was more interested in what if any tankmates they work with and if anyone had seen any in the uk or knew how i could source one???

Its your fish and your fish tank. You can do what you want with it. Pikes are very cool. I currently only have one a 7" Johanna. He is very aggressive. I had him in a 90 with 3 9" piranha. He would get his tail bit every once in a while but that would just tell me it was time to feed the big boys. Whenever the rbp's would chase him and try to bite him, he would just bite back. Very cool fish.
Anyways back to your topic. I'm pretty sure you can acclimatize them, just do it over a period of time. Slowly raise the tank temp, wait a few weeks and raise it again.

piks are boring and so are pickerel's..I have had both, they act like a wolf fish minus laying on the bottom..Only exciting during "CHOW" time..

I admire your ability to realize that many of the Esox would not make great aquarium fish. Settling on a grass or redfin is a great choice! Pm me, if you can work through the customs, you shall get your grass pickerel.

We're talking about Northern hemisphere Pikes. Genus Esox. Not Pike cichlids genus Crenicichla.

Northern pike do not live in the Southern part of the county but can withstand temps you might see in the average tropical home aquarium. This isn't to say the fish will thrive at home. If you look at areas where pike thrive, it's indeed quite cool, clear water with a good forage base, shallow weedy bays for spawning and contrasting points for intermediate fish.

Grass pickerel and redfin pickerel indeed live in warmer water but even then I'd suggest cool temps (cooler than average tropical fish temps) for a long lived healthy fish.

You can do all kinds of silly things with fish but the rule of thumb with N/A natives (and presumably European natives as well) is "no heater" .

Thanks for the advise.. i will bare it all in mind whilst carrying on my research!

hmm seems importation of esox sp. is illeagal in the uk... so im gona have a long hard think... im pretty confident that warmer water tends to stunt the growth of pike as the larger ones tend to be in canada n siberia from what i have read... so thinking i will probly give this one a miss as if i were to keep a pike i would want it in best possible health...

Living in Canada, I cannot see succesfully keeping a Northern Pike in tank setup, allthough I have seen them in large public Aquariums. I love fishing for these becauase of the great fight they put up ( no offense ) I know they love colder water, in summer water temperature would barely exceed 40 F. And they do quite well when the lakes are frozen over almost half the year. One thing I can say for certain is the colder the temp, the slower the growth, and the longer the life span. Also they will eat, or attempt to eat, anything smaller than half there size. So for tankmates, if you proceed, keep the size in mind. Pickerel, or walleye grow slower. Honestly cant think of anything practical or compatible. I've grown up fishing for these and just cant imagine them in a tank.
