Northfin food

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ooh, ouch. lol

I would agree 100% with you Matt, if we were discussing Lake Malawi, and the fishes found in the lake. Next to Ad himself you probably couldn't find a more experienced person. (outside of the native divers themselves) But I have conversed and read posts by Larry for many years, as far back as I can recall, and a nutrition expert he ain't. So he likes Xtreme now, WTF does that have to do with a thread about Northfin, and EQ levels? lol

As always, a pleasure for you to stop by and add your vast experience and profound knowledge.

Neil, why I mentioned what I feed my rays is because this thread shows me and probably others that you can not trust all fish food companies, we have no idea what's in all fish food, it's processed food and no way of knowing the quality. People lie. heck, we cant even trust human processed food! So my comment didn't add to the thread in regards to info but is a direct result of this threads info.

It's all good Mike, but the problem with those kind of personal fish food opinion discussions, is they always degrade quickly, with everyone wanting to whip it out and display what food is best. Look at all the brands already mentioned, other than the one that the OP asked about. C'mon, you have seen this many times yourself over the years. 10 pages in and somehow it will result in being all my fault. lol

That's NOT what this discussion is about, and stating what one feeds doesn't impress the point that you just stated anymore than what was already there. Obviously not all manufacturers can be taken for their word, in the world of fish food, and elsewhere. Common sense would dictate that - but this discussion is pretty specific, about 1 company, and 1 form of preservative, and the levels found in their food.

What people like Matt don't realize, is these types of open discussions, on public forums, can and often do create changes within the industry. No company wants to be caught with their pants down, and/or be targeted by consumers as being dishonest, or selling faulty goods. Threads like this don't just vaporize with time, google can keep them alive for lurkers for years.

I see a happy ending here, others may not have the same vision.

As I was saying .........

http://nlsfishfood.com/nls-and-preservatives/

A new controversy over ethoxyquin preservative in tropical fish food has been brought to our attention, and we’ve been asked about where New Life Spectrum stands in the matter — both our perspective on the subject and in regards to our product. We thought it would be a good time to let everyone in on some things we’re working on behind the scenes:

This fall, we’re launching our next generation of the Spectrum Nutrition Formula. Our distributors have already been informed and are readying their shelves for September! Along with improvements, including using high-protein squid and ginger to boost resistance to parasites, the new formula will use only Naturox-preserved ingredients. We’ve been working on this with suppliers behind closed doors for a while — and all the needed ingredients are finally available using this natural, alternative antioxidant.

Occasionally, New Life Spectrum® is asked for statements stating we’re “ethoxyquin-free”. We never have. We refused to provide a marketing-convenient answer that didn’t match reality. While we don’t add ethoxyquin to our formula, available ingredients have used this common, FDA allowed antioxidant. In the upcoming formula, for clarity and to address any concerns, we will indicate Naturox along with the ingredients.

In this online uproar, we noticed certain revelations have ignited speculation that most tropical fish diets may contain far beyond 150ppm (or even 300ppm) of the controversial preservative. In the interest of transparency, we’ve sent samples of our current formula to accredited labs and will be posting the original reports on our site. We don’t now claim to be “ethoxyquin-free,” but we’re confident the results will be well under these figures. Once our new Naturox preserved New Life Spectrum formulas are released, we will test and release ethoxyquin level reports online for those as well.

With all that said: despite discontinuing ethoxyquin in favor of Naturox, it’s still our position that Ethoxyquin, used in FDA approved amounts of 150ppm (or better yet under 100ppm), has never been shown to cause health problems in pet fish. The fact is, there are no documented cases where ethoxyquin at these levels has been found to cause any long term negative health problems in fish (or even dogs and cats). This concern was sparked by a 1987 study that suggested a carcinogenic potential in rats dosed with a 5,000 ppm of ethoxyquin. The FDA has ruled that the additive “may be safely used in animal feeds.” In consideration of lactating dogs who may nurse, dog food companies do voluntarily limit ethoxyquin concentrations to 75ppm.

Our move toward Naturox is based on a desire to respond to the concerns of hobbyists, allowing people to feed highly nutritious New Life Spectrum without worry. Yet we won’t market Spectrum as “ethoxyquin free” despite this. Ingredients we will source are preserved with Naturox, but realistically they’re stored and produced by suppliers that do provide the more standard ethoxyquin-preserved ingredients. Thus, our goal is for the preservative to be zero, but if present to only be in trace amounts of about 5ppm or less. New Life Spectrum® is committed that the promises we make are conservative — and when bold, as with our Spectrum Guarantee (www.nlsfishfood.com/guarantee), 100% supportable. Therefore, we will only claim that we are sourcing ingredients certified as having no ethoxyquin by suppliers we trust. We will also test our raw ingredients when received to ensure our suppliers are meeting this standard.

Sincerely,
Ian Tepoot, President
New Life International, Inc.

This is a thread about northfin exclusively! There's no room for talk of NLS! :D:D

In all seriousness, this sort of statement/engagement from NLS is what I want from Northfin at this point... without it I don't think I'd care to give them any more business. They might have a great fish food, but....................

Wow. I'm impressed. You can put me in the camp of people that did not imagine a thread on a fish forum could be the vehicle driving change.

I stand corrected.

LOL, I actually debated about posting that here, but seeing as others have already mentioned the NLS brand in this discussion, I felt that it was probably as good as place as any. :)

Hopefully other companies will follow suit and demonstrate the same kind of transparency. It's all for the greater good, right?

NLS has always been one step up in the game. This is obviously why Northfin tried to replicate it. That is a very noble statement from the president of NLS!Thanks for sharing Neil. Makes me very pleased! Can't wait!

So I emailed Northfin to let them know that the report showing elevated levels of EQ was on a popular fish forum I frequent, and to express my dismay as a Canadian consumer who would like nothing more than to support a Canadian company, but given the uncertainty over the levels of EQ I just can't.

They did reply to me and said they are investigating the matter. It would be great for PR if they announced this publicly.
