Northfin food

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Saw that and found it interesting. Wondered what the company is at the same time I respected the post for being informative rather than marketing. A little odd the crickets from NF on the matter at the same time NLS has recognized, acknowledged, and addressed the fact it's a topic of discussion among fishkeepers. I'm just a bystander here, but the optimist in me would like to think at some point NF might at least say something simple, like 'we've identified the source of the issue and it's being corrected in this or that manner.'

But I'm assuming honest intentions on their part, though their marketing description that they 'don't use fats or oils so preservatives are not needed' never did quite add up for me with the ingredients, guaranteed analysis, and basic nutritional needs of fish (and just about any other animal) all indicating otherwise regarding fats, while sardines and herring, praised in their marketing as good sources of omega-3 fatty acids, are so because they're oily fish.

This is what neutrino is referring to: Northfin cichlid Ingredients: Whole Antarctic Krill Meal, High Omega-3 (DHA) Herring Meal, Whole Sardine Meal, Wheat Flour…with opposite statements: “we don’t use fats or oil so preservatives are not needed”. you can’t have the cake and eat it too.

Mark Twain: " “If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.”

Hello everyone. New to the online forum posting. I have always just quietly observed different aquatic forums for interesting topics and I thought I might just chime in here. I have been keeping aquarium fish since 1972 and have never been without an aquarium in all my life. I have a true passion for the hobby and currently keep many types of aquarium fish. I have kept and bred thousands of fish in my life. In my opinion, I do not think the ethoxyquin is that much of concern here. Just recently, ethoxyquin have appeared into my vocabulary. I have never known about the preservative nor cared about it. I currently have a Striped Raphael and Spotted Raphael Catfish that is 39yrs, 31yrs.old. Jardini Arowana 29 yrs. old , Red Hook Mets 26 yrs old and many other fish well over 20 years old. They all have been on a diet of Tetra, Wardley, Hikari, Omega, NLS and most recently Northfin foods. Since I keep so many fish and aquariums, I always go for the quick and easy. Dried processed food have been 95% of their diet. I very rarely lose a fish due to unknown causes and most of my fish live far longer than what is expected. My point here, is that, I do not believe that the levels of perservatives (ethoxyquin) in the formulas of fish food that I have been feeding is that harmful to the fish. Just my observation here since my fish are old and healthy. It is hard to imagine that NF had such high levels of EQ in their food when they are the only company claiming EQ free formula
I have started to read each company's claims about their food though and NF seems to have stated some unbelievable facts. I would obviously like to see more natural, preservative free products come to the market though. It can only be better for my fish's health.

I don't think anyone was nearly concerned about the amount of etho as the false advertising of being preservative free. I don't mind feeding my fish a bit of etho as long as the manufacturer doesn't tell me it's not in there.

Would love to see some pics of those old fish, especially the jardini

Same here, would love to see 20+year old fish.

Just a quick shout out to kmuda - whatever happened with the independent lab reports testing for EQ that you were going to have run on some of the various commercial foods, including NF?

This seemed to be the #1 ingredient on your pet food hit list (ethoxyquin), but when presented with a golden opportunity you decide to take a pass? And on your website, NF is still rated with 6 stars (your highest rating) where you state:
This food does not contain Ethoxyquin (or any other questionable preservatives), Synthetic Vitamin K, or artifical coloring agents.

I don't get it?

I remember that "ranking" of the fish foods he did years ago...

I didn't exactly agree...then and certainly don't now...

I don't think he was objective in his research or conclusions

i think I'm feeding my midevil north fin. i have these pellets in an unmarked bag and sure they're north fin.
he likes them. doesn't s*** all day long. I'm happy with it.
I really want to try to feed mine midevil too

And we'll see if AAFCO gives a damn or not. I want to have more test results before I begin knocking on that door.

and .......

If the dog bites you once, it's the dogs fault. If he bites you twice, it's your fault
I am getting that question answered. I don't intend on being bitten twice..... and it's something I should have done in the first place.
