Odd behavior

retake your tests as you should not have 0 nitrate then post the real results. as for PH why in the world would you want to drop to 4 that will just make things worse your ph seems just fine.

as for your ray some people say this happens with rays that are not eating but could be something else. tell us everything about your tank like tankmates, wc schedule, what are you feeding and how often, what are you treating your water with, lighting, and things of that sort.

Nitrates read at 0. I test water EVERY day and it is ALMOST ALWAYS 0. There is probably some nitrate in there but it is below my kits detectable levels.

It's a bare bottom quarantine tank (40 breeder). It automatically changes the water 3 times a day (25% each) with heated, buffered RO/DI water. There are no tank mates. Just one approximately 4 inch motoro ray pup.

Filtered by a magnum 350 filled with carbon, and a emperor 350 with carbon inserts.

Most parasites don't withstand low pH and if you drop slowly you don't harm fish. This method was something that Jack Whattley taught me for discus I don't know if it works with rays that's why I asked.

I took my water in and had it tested at school on a UV spec. Nitrates showed up at .001 ppb (parts per billion). I think at this point its safe to say my water quality is NOT the issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to something I might try? This little guy is still not eating and is very hard to watch :(

well one thing is for sure what works for some fish wont work for them all. especially when you are working with rays.

it seems it seems like with those wc's you would have a low nitrate like stated so thats a good thing. florencebigfish is really going to be the one to talk to on this one and maybe i think i have heard one other person say something about this problem. i would really start talking to them as he had this with one of his pups.

maybe read through the thread you were given and try to get a hold of him to see if its the same and to see what he tried through the process. i really hope the little one pulls through. also maybe go through past posts about getting rays to eat but i really think working with florencebigfish will do good and hopefully we will see improvements.

good luck wish i could help more on this.

We never did figure out what happened. Its a horrible thing to watch and i dont wish it on anyone. Only thing i can reccomend is to keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best. Good luck jdbrock and i hope for the best.

Where is the new water coming from to be at zero nitrate? Thecreason I ask is that if adding un buffered ro water the I suspect the ph could be crashing or fluctuating.

My nitrate is coming out of tap below what a salifert test will register but my tank runs 10 to 40 depending on what part of weekly water change I am at (recently not abovev10/25 but that's another thread)

I expect you are changingba lot of water therefore keeping nitrate so low.... If this is the case then just confirm the temp is not changing massively and dechlorinator being used.

If this is the same as florences issue then unlikely to be anything simple with the water as they pretty much ruled that out.

Good luck

I have a cistern. RO/DI water is made nightly buffered with Neutral Regulator and Discus Buffer. Chlorine isn't a problem so no dechlor needed. And the temperature is maintained in the storage barrel by a pair of heaters to keep it at 80 degrees (same temp as the tank).

Also he's eating quite well but not looking good.

which is why I asked.

I have read through the thread provided and haven't had much luck with anything.

well thats odd fbf's wasnt eating if i remember right.

since yours is though how does the poo look and how is the breathing look from top and bottom? with the wc schedule and the carbon im guessing you havent tried treating it with anything and if you have what did you use and how?
