This trait is more common in unwell fish, Ive seen it in largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, guppy, cichlids, angelfish, saltwater angelfish, lots of fish I can named can have this half face marks. Most of time this mark's gone when the fish feel better.

In short words, this is NOT piebald jewel cichlid.
no pix tho right?
and this guy was like this right when i pulled him from the wild till now a week or 2 later....

Ive found malawi cichlids with somthing similar where half od their face goes black also a big cichla was posted on here with the same thing.

Its supposed to be somthing to do with nerve endings damaged or somthing.
Bingo! i dont think this jewel born with that mark.

still an oddball and not normal lol :grinno:
I had a least killifish that recently out of the bag from shipping and it has that mark..probably the box was thrash around and the mark disappeared a month later. Same thing with my bluegill that I caught on hook and he got injured and the mark suddenly there. The mark disappeared next month later.

I believe that your oddball jewel will recovered from injury and become normal. just what exactly how you caught this jewel cichlid? Cast net?
