oddball jewel cichlid

I'm guessing stress/damage too. i've seen it happen to steelhead that in the creeks late and thier dorsals stick out, so the portion out of the water freezes and then the damaged tissue turns black.
 
recently saw a thread with a peacock bass with a half black face also

i caught it like this and a week or 2 later its the same
blame the net next,its ok,i seen it instantly when i netted it
if it goes away cool

im thinking of putting it in a tank to try to get it to breed and see if it changes :D
Yes its prefect line, no crooked lines or curves, just straight line from mouth to the gills.
