oddball jewel cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here's what Ron Coleman has to say about similar looking fish.

If it is just one side, e.g., the left side of the head, then this usually indicated nerve damage. I have seen this on various other cichlids before, sometimes it is the head, sometimes the back quadrant of the body, but the telltale symptom is that it is only on one side. It doesn't seem to affect them much but it is very interesting.

no offense but some of yall are dumbasses... midnight isnt a dummy uve seen all his netting threads... if any of us MFKers would know what a wild caught jewel wil look like its him. Is it so hard to believe the guy when he says hes found a color morph?

Heh. Would you like to insert foot in mouth now or wait a bit?

It's not a color morph, the straight line going down the slope of the head is indicative of nerve damage.

Some photos from discus websites...sometimes the nerve damage controlling the melanin pigment gets better, sometimes not.

And a severum. From the "Handbook of Fish Diseases by Dieter Untergasser, TFH Publications, Inc. 1989"

blackarea.jpg

If a blackened area appears on a fish, it is possibly due to a pinched nerve. This could be secondary to a tumor or swelling. Swelling may be due to internal infections, internal parasite infestation (dropsy or bloating due to internal parasites, according to Dieter Untergasser, 1989).

That enough?

Looks like someone got Midnight lots of pictures.
