Odor Question

A 56 g Tall tank with a 7" Oscar and two 3-4" Oscars & you just changed out the old substrate and put a different filter on? There's your answer right there. Just give it time. While you're waiting you might look into a bigger tank for the fish, they really need more room asap. I know it's not what you want to hear but I can't stop myself from saying it.

Quite the contrary I am open to any tips I can get. I know they need more room im buying a 125 at the end of the month. I didnt remove all of the old substrate only about half of it and I didnt put a different filter on, I added one along side my other. Does no one review past pages?

I would add gravel...it helps due to the bacteria in it and the fish
don't like glass bottoms... reflection, too bright, which way is up ,ETC....

Yes we do reveiw and telling the hole story will get you better truthful answers. So you have NO gravel like you stated before or you have half of what you did have because people started saying that was the problem. I am not a fish master by no means. But common sense is common sense.

Oops, sorry. I thought I had read the whole thing and that you'd said it was a barebottom tank-my mistake then.
A 125 g is much better than a 56 g Tall, a lot more surface area and stretching room. Each Oscar needs approx. 55 g each to make your job of tank maintenence easier though. It's normally recommended not to keep 3 Oscars together because once they reach sexual maturity at about 8" the chances of a pair forming and the odd man out getting stomped is pretty high. I do want to help, they're my favorite fish and I like to see them appreciated and taken care of. We all have to learn somewhere :-)
 
twisted penguin is giving out good information. if i were you, id go buy a good test kit (not strips-they tend to get dampened by moisture in the air every time you use them) and just test your ammonia, nitrItes, and nitrAte levels.. just to see IF you are going through a mini cycle.. if you are, there is nothing you can do but wait.. or run some charcoal to try and remove the odor..i use purigen in my canisters and love it..

if you arent cycling, i would wait a few days, then do another big waterchange. what he said about having 3 oscars is right.. you will probably have two pair up, and the third will get beat to heck and back.. three oscars wont do in a 125 unless they are very docile..

best of luck to ya! i dont think anyone is trying to be mean or criticize you, but alot of us have owned oscars for a looong time and are just trying to tell you what to expect..
 
Well its not really bare bottom per say, I just have no gravel. What i have is 3 medium sized stones (black) and 3 medium pieces of driftwood. I find it much easier to clean / maintain and i think my oscars like having something to swim through and hunt guppies in :P.

Ill have to wait till next monday (payday) to buy the test kit, and my oscars are semi docile, ive never seen them challenge each other...yet. they usually get along pretty good.

Just FYI-feeder fish are a really bad idea. They're not good nutrition plus they bring in lots of different diseases. Ich is one thing but once you've dealt with columnaris, lymphocystis, anchor worms or one of the others you'll change your mind in a hurry.
