I don't agree with that way of thinking

you should get good service because it's their job to do so. sure, don't be a complete douche to a server, but you shouldn't have to try to be their bff in order to get good service.

just like you shouldn't have to go outta your way to get to know a surgeon on a personal level so that he'll put more effort into carefully cutting you open and performing at his best

you as a consumer don't owe them anything. they however, are getting paid to do a job and should go outta their way to make sure your experience was pleasant. and that shouldn't be contingent on how nice and sweet and personable you were to them. MOST importantly, it shouldn't even be contingent on the amount of tip they're gonna get
