From what I understand, once they're fully corded, they're pretty low maintenance... my neighbour's jack Russells would fit the bill for you but they're small... and yappy
I'm going to start looking for a dog. Most important thing is an easy going attitude. Is it contradicting to say next I want a dog that naturally gaurds? Any suggestions, I want a med to large dog.

Definitely. When I was young I picked my dog solely on what I thought was cool, I don't want to make that mistake again.All you need is a dog that makes noise. More important will be the energy, maintenance needs and the time you have to devote to something that is much more than just a four legged alarm system.
^ yeah, get a 3 legged dog. Less work and better alarm system
