What do you mean by calm? Lots of dogs don't tend to be hyper even when young, but a young dog is never going to be as calm as an adult.

Well I had an Alaskan Malamute. It definitely could have been the lack of training on my part, but he was distracted by everything it seemed like. And if he wanted to check something out, we usually did.
Could you mention a few med to large breeds that are known to be less hyper, even when young?

I'm a firm believer in looking for the right individual, regardless of breed.
However, if a dog has some capacity for higher energy, then I absolutely want it to love playing fetch! focused play-directed energy can be worked off. random energy= bad behavior most often.

I've found that all canine energy can have a outlet. Its just finding it and helping the dog work it out. I love random energy, perfect for training lol

but I said "most often", meaning the average owner is not a trainer. especially as years go by, people are all excited with puppies and work with them, but can't keep up with that long term and get rid of dogs because it never becomes more manageable.

True to some extent, but:
1. If you want a specific breed, that narrows the perfect individual down anyway
2. Shelter dogs are different, with them it is extremely important of course to look for one that suits you!

I keep hearing shelter dogs are different, obviously trauma changes things. What are things to look for?

not 100% reliable. people also really need to compare any available individuals with "the breed" they think they like, because they will vary so much.
