Hello; I get your point. The media makes a sensation out of these things. We on this thread and other online forums like it make it a big deal by simply having this discussion. For some "nut jobs" such coverage and public exposure seems to be an incentive.
I see at least two problems with the proposal to not report their names. First is the freedom of the press. I simply do not think that any sort of law can be had to prevent the media from reporting the news. Outside of such a law I do not think the media can be relied upon to "do the right thing." Makes me think of a line from a Don Henley song; "...is the head dead yet?" So many of our media sources thrive on the sensational stories. I fear they will continue to go for the sensational story even if it encourages the next "nut job."
Another is the, to me at least, unrealistic notion that banning the capacity for self defense in particular public places is a proper practice. I taught in public schools for over thirty years and was banned by law from having the means to defend both myself and my students. I saw for myself various holes in the security plans of several schools. It was often a conflict between the convenience of free movement and true security. For example, one of my classrooms was next to what was intended to be a secure outside door. The door was locked from the outside but could be opened from the inside for an emergency. Every day students would open the door to let people in even though everyone was supposed to go around to a monitored door. I reported this a few times to no avail. This was over ten years ago so my information may be dated, but these incidents continue to happen.
We had one armed resource officer on duty much of the time. One for a large campus. He was sometimes called away and you knew when because his marked cruiser would be gone from it's parking spot.
Even if you are correct in that the naming and reporting of these mass murdering nut jobs on today leads to the next one in the future, I just do not see anyway such reporting is going to stop.
