I understand that Pmart does not sell SW fish. But, they do sell saltwater products, so shouldn't they have some training about saltwater? At least how to tell the difference between fresh and saltwater?

Sure. They can tell the difference between Freshwater and Saltwater hard goods, Not fish. Ask a PetSmart associate for a protein skimmer or marine flakes, they can find it, I bet you. Can they help you set-up a saltwater tank? Probably not.. I would look at the saltwater section more as a service they provide, than their focus market.

That is correct. Petsmart doesn't sell snakes, etc. But doesn't Petsmart sell snake accessories? So shouldn't the employees be trained about snakes so they can help customers make the right decision about snake products?

They carry very few snake specific products, but a broad range of products that can be used with reptiles. If someone asks for a basking bulb, they will find it. If they ask what kind of basking bulb they should use for a snake, they probably won't know.

PS employees are educated based on the animals that they sell, in their store. They are their to help educate prospective pet owners on pets they are going to buy, in their store.

Why should a PS employee be responsible for educating a customer on an animal they don't even sell? Shouldn't it be the customers responsibility, and why should the customer be angry if they can't help? It's ridiculous.

(They do sell corn snakes in some stores because they will eat prepared foods. They do not sell saltwater fish, in ANY, store. I would love to see proof of it.)

(PS. I do not know a single, absolute bit of knowledge about wild bird seed.. :WHOA:.)

What I think is funniest is that everyone expects petco/petland/petsmart to have knowledgeable staff for each of the animals they carry. But how many go to walmart to learn about a good digital camera, or to learn and buy a barbecue/grill? While yes, occasionally you find the odd person (Miles) that knows a ton of information about the product, but in general, if you want to pay as little as possible, don't expect to find knowledge waiting for you. As Miles said, do your own research. When I go to any pet store, private, corporate or even the specialty shops, I always give the employees a chance. Regardless, I like to talk fish, it doesn't matter if they know as much as me, or more, talking about fish can be done with a bum on the side of the street. If you find someone that does know a lot, pick their brain for what you can, and just enjoy the time talking to them.
