Ok Im starting my DIY stand now!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its ok because I like how you did and its alwaya good to have a guide.

And I have news for everyone!

We bought screws 2" long. The home depot guy told us a half inch inside the other side will do. Well its not working. So tomorrow well go back and get the 2.5" screws.

So another set back. But I have all my wood cut and everything so this shouldnt slow me down too bad. So thats that. Sorry about this guys. Ill post my pix and my steps tomorrow.

sucks when you have so many setbacks, but it'll be worth it in the end!

Yea. Thanks for your encouragement tho. :)

next time you have a question, PM me... home depot employee's arent always the swiftest...

All right will do.

I think I know that now. Wish I would of known earlier. lol.

Usually the rule of thumb is...

"The nail or screw should go half-way into the second piece." meaning, if a board is 2 inches wide, you want a 3" screw. NOTE: 2x4's are 1.5"x3.5" so you want AT LEAST 2 1/2" but try to get 2 3/4" and dont countersink them...

3" screws might slightly stick out which could be dangerous...

ALSO...
Although EVERYONE hates it, its messy, annoying, and somewhat expensive you should ALWAYS USE GLUE on something permanent like a movable fishtank stand... If you use enough, and the joint is tight enough, the glue will become stronger that the wood.

What does this mean? if you throw your stand off of a 100 ft building, the 2x4's will snap before the seam breaks.

The rule about the length of the screw/nail usually applies to finish work. With rough framing (2 by anythings) you just want it to hold. So the coarser, the better.

One more thing I cant stress enough, especially on a fishtank, is to go to the dollar store and invest in a cheap level. It will save you so many head aches...

be sure to buy decking screws and NOT "drywall" screws.

I have one of those. Glad I have it too. lol. And I have L brackets also.

Thank you for all of your tips.

We finally have an update! With pix too!

This picture shows some wood I had. I sanded what needed to be sanded, not all of it. So thats the wood all sanded up.
