i would chose which fish you wan't if you got a bigger tank then you could keep the eye biter firemouths and bichir or keep the JDs and go for a south american tank those fish will do much better if kept at the right PH
just to clear this up for a few ppl here, including Cross.
CB has a sex thread almost ever week on here, and it mainly always involves his firemouths. so, saying this he does IN FACT have 1 female firemouth. the pics on page 3 clearly shows her vent. Just like before on many occasions of damn near the same vent pics, several pictures tho.
honestly you and all who else thinks he has 2 males, and if your 1000% positive, then go read somemore ****, and research becasue you obviously do not know what your talking about....
with that said gl CB, i think you will always have problems with those fish in that tank. it's just to small to have a pair comfortably breed in, given that there are so many fish in it.
i think you FM's are looking great considering their situation. take care CB.

I don't need to go somewhere else and read some more ****. I know what I am looking at when I sex fish. Just so happens that the pic on page three is not a ovipositor if you even know what that is. We will see when she decideds to lay eggs. If there is no eggs within in now and 4 weeks then there is no doubt in my mind that the FM's are males. Hell if he had them for this long there should have at least been one instance where the female attempted to lay eggs. Her belly had to bulge at one point or another. I know my Female FM did but they weren't fertilized. She used to lay eggs on a 5 week basis some times more but still she did. Maybe you should research how to vent fish. I am not hear to cause a fight with you but I just have my reasons on what I am certain in MY MIND not yours and I am aloud to give CB advice. Hell maybe I am wrong and if I am I apologize for commenting on this thread but In my mind I am not wrong. My females Ovi was much larger than that.

They will look like firemouths. There are not as many different patterns in these guys as there could be in other cichlids. Mainly the shade of orange to red in the belly.
