One big fish for a 55 long?

Any fish that grows to 12"s is just too big for a 55gal tank as a permanent home....I would look into fishes in the 7-10" range. Personally I would get an Electric Blue Jack Dempsey....they have wonderful coloration, great personalities, and are hardy once they reach 4"+......and they do very well by themselves....my two cents...

green terrors get too big as well males easily reach 8-10" some males do grow to 12" ... any fish that gets over 8" should not be in a 12" wide tank... to the op i would do convicts, firmouths, salvini, or a colony of rams..
