One Month Update of New Lapradei Bichirs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can tell that they are related to piranha when it comes feeding time. They are voracious feeders and come feeding time there was no way I would get away without getting hosed when they went for the food. Otherwise they were just really stupid. They would be in a corner and freak out like they couldn't find their way out, lol, sad but true. Plus the bioload of seven large red hooks was trmendous. The tank maintence became so much easier when they were gone.
Bio load for me is no issue since i do WC twice a week, as for aggressive eater its fine aslong as they dont get on my polys way. Plus i like how they are peacefull that they dont reall bother my bichirs in the bottom. I feed the SD during morning with floating pellets and lettuce while at night i feed my bichirs during the lights are off.

Polyaddict86 Polyaddict86 will you have the time to feed twice daily when the 2nd kid come along? How big are your SD? I wish I have the time to feed twice daily and 2x waterchange a week.

DMD123 DMD123 I tried feeding with the lights off last night and apparently my other bichirs love eating in the dark too. The weeksi didn't get as much food as I wanted to. I am going to try again tonight.

FishNCash FishNCash - think any shy poly u put into your set up will be at a feeding disadvantage due to the large bass and dat, and larger lower jaws.

Just my experience here, but I've owned 4 weeksii ranging from 7"-16". Some that I grew out. They are shy by nature. Love their hiding spots if given one. They don't gorge themselves on food in general. They'll swallow a couple here and there or eat when you're not looking. Once they get over 13". Eating habit almost resemble like most ornates I've owned, but just more selective.

im sure ill find time to do twice a day feeding. My polys only eat every other day sometimes every other two days. As for the SD they are around 3"-5" and i only got 3 at that size and in the grow out tank i have 6 that are 1". I only have the SD for a week now, so far i have no problem with feeding, i put a lettuce every two day and put pellets in the morning before going to work. I do two WC a week one in wed night around 10:00pm 20% no vacuum no glass cleaning just straight WC, second WC is sunday when my wife is at home, i do 60% with vacuum gravel and clean the glass and the socks for the sump.

Use additional python waterchangers to drain. I use 3 and it's quick 'out'. The 'in' is slow cuz I regulate temp from the kitchen faucet. About 15-20 bucks each from craigslist. :-)

Thats what i do, two phyton waterhanger, one on each side, 20% of the water only takes me 10min plus i attach it to a garden hose so the hose go staright from the outside since my tank is in the garage.

Polyaddict86 Polyaddict86 Are u using two Python to drain or refill? If draining then you just add a pump. I fill faster than I drain because i use a 3/4" garden hose. I need to find a pump adapter to drain faster.

I use it to drain, i attached a pump in the phyton and on the other side of the pump i attached the garden hose. Filling up i just just the regular garden hose when i attached it to the kitchen sink, you just need to buy the adaptor for the sink at ace hardware or home depot, but sometimes i dont even use the warm water, i just use the regular water from outside.
