Opinions and some brainstorming need.

So far 2 are eating very well the last 2 days.. the third not as much but it is still early. Levels have been good until tonight when I got a .25 ammonia reading; the nitrite is 0 and the nitrate is at 10. I'm hoping a water change will help settle things out. My opinion is they are fairly hardy fish and should be ok with that low of an ammonia level as long as I recitify it ASAP. What do you think?

Only way to tell is to try. There are ammonia neutralisers if you want to be sure and protect the fish. I've heard good things about API Ammo-Lock. It makes the ammonia harmless to the fish by absorbing it into a more complex molecule while still leaving it available to the bacteria. The ammonia will still show up on the tests if you use a neutraliser though. Makes it tough to tell if there is dangerous ammonia or a harmless compound that's absorbed ammonia.

If you use prime, you can just dose the tank with it, as it should lock up free ammonia. Also, bichirs can go on hunger strikes for no reason, but they can go a while without eating just fine. Eventually it should start eating, just keep an eye on it.

Any pics of the setup and bichirs yet?

I'll try and get some pics up tonight!

Ok working on pics as i type this. I did a 8 gallon water change today, added 2 large fake plants from my 8 year old tank and added a little gravel...hoping that will have seeded more good bacteria to help clear out this little bit of ammonia.

It's been a while since I've taken aquarium shots so I know they kinda suck...I'll work on getting them to look nicer. This is a different camera so its a pain in the butt. But at least this gives you guys something to look at.

Looks nice! Have you fallen in love with the bichirs yet? They're such cool fish... one of my fiance's favorites...

Yeah very very cool. Im loving them, just hoping i can get this ammonia down to 0 again in the next day or two.

Ammonia levels look to be at or just barely above 0 now. We are in the clear.

OK lets shake things up...we are at minimum 2 weeks out before I add any more fish to the tank, but I'm thinking there is to be a change. Bichirs are obviously staying I love these guys. I think I'm going to scratch the brown African knife as it will be hiding alot during the day and even though it is a very cool fish I've had one before. The African leaf fish seems very cool but also on its own seems to lack some personality. So we are partially back to the drawing board on what to add to the tank. This is not the end all tank as my wife and I plan to purchase a very large tank in the next 2 years once we have our house found, purchased and moved into.
