Opinions and some brainstorming need.

I'd still say pipefish, but I don't think they'd work very long with the bichirs...

I still think a couple pairs of apistogramma would look really nice in there, especially if you added some live floating plants...

Don't they only get like 3 1/2" max ( am I thinking the right fish here), wouldn't they become bichir lunch and dinner?

Possibly. You could go with larger cichids, maybe some bolivian rams. I had those for a couple years and they're pretty fun (although not as fun as german rams).

I don't know. Those bichirs are so small, its going to take them a while to be dangerous to anything besides a guppy, I'd think.

What did you have in mind?

No clue! I've always wanted to keep some clown loaches...were hoping once we get moved out of our townhouse and into a large house we can setup something really big like 200+ so I'm not so worried about the future of keeping clowns just I wonder how quickly they get to big for my size tank.

Pikes are really cool looking but I've yet to see any at my LFS and trying to get them to special order something is dangerous and a pain in the butt. :) Probably gonna pass on the rams as my wife's community planted tank will be having a pair so I'll have some to look at there.

Far as clowns go, I've never heard of them growing fast. I've only ever seen one as an adult (it was about 7 inches). They occupy the same tankspace as the bichir as well. If you want something to keep the top of the tank occupied, I've always found African Butterflies to be pretty. Never owned one though. Hatchet fish keep to the top of the tank as well. Neither of those fish get big though, if you're looking for a longer term tankmate, you could look into giant gouramis. I've only kept dwarfs but they have a lot of personality and seem to be tough enough to share a tank with a bichir.

Yeah you got me so hooked on pikes I'm having a difficult time since they don't have any around here, large or small. :( Not a huge fan of the butterflies or gouramis (remind me of boring community tanks). Yeah i'm not 100% sold on needing upper level fish but my options are open. Can't be too aggressive that it picks on the bichirs and can't be too small that they will eat them.

All 3 bichirs are eating as of 2 days ago. They love them some shrimp pellets.

As it happens, mine was a special order by a privately owned store. You might want to try some privately owned places and see if they do any business with importers. Mine was brought in as an "oddball" fish, according to the store owner they get something unusual or large from out of country about every three years. I just got lucky. She's offered to order other exotics for me through her contacts though. Maybe if you get to know a local store owner you could get the same kind of arrangement.

And there's always aquabid, or some of the vendors on here could order you something, I'm sure.

Never had fish delivered to the door that could be a nice idea.
