Opinions on EHEIM vs FX5!?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its all about how much you want to spend. Ehiems are awesome filter, and look sleek and modern to boot, but cost a bit more than Fluvals. Fluvals get the job done, and look like it too. Personally, since I don't have the stand for my tank, I'd rather have a Ehiem visible than a Fluval. I know people who love an Ehiem better than a Fluval, and vice versa. It comes down to the cost. And sometimes, who carries the spare parts and media or even has the actually filter. My LFS only carries parts for Fluvals and only carries them as well. It costs extra to order them. Ehiems always seem to cost more in the long run, but thats just me.

Yeah, after all the early feedback, I'm thinking of going with the Eheim 2262 AND the 2217 that I have on hand. This will be plenty of filtration for the monsters I plan to keep for the next 3 years(in which time I'll upgrade to a 300g). This seems to make the most sense, and is still within my budget. Going around to all the local aquatic stores and seeing if anyone has them on the shelf.

The best price currently is on eBay I can find...385 free shipping and no sales tax outside of ca...I doubt LFS can come close. Incidentally there is a couple of places outside ca that sell this for close to this price if one wish to dodge sales tax in ca

Google a store called the hidden reef its in pa. That's where I get all my stuff and they compete with eBay and online prices.

from everything I have read I agree, but are the eheims twice as good as the fx5 to justify twice the price?

Howdy,

Good call to go with the 2262. I am running two on my 220 gal. As for value, my oldest Eheim kicked the bucket after twentysome years nonstop operation, whereas FX5 have only been on the market for a quarter of that and we've had members report failures. In the long run, Eheims are better value

if you want to go with eheim i'd go with the eheim pro 3 xl 2080 or 2180!
these are beasts! but both eheim and fluval has its ups and downs. Like
fx5 is stronger gph wise at 924gph made for 400g where as the pro3 2080
or 2180 only has 450gph made for 320g. i'd call it preference by users.
heres a link where they compared the two.

Actually I would not get a 2080 or the 1200xl. 2262 is a better filter.

2262 drives 900 gph and has a massive 4.8 gallon capacity. As I said before, 3 times the volume of FX5. At double the price, I still think its a good deal. and it is cheaper than the pro 3 1200xl.
