Opinions on "Overcrowding" SA/CA Cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is always a gamble. Different fish, even of the same species, = different personalities. I think a lot of the time, you don't know if something is going to work until you try it.

So, give it a go, and good luck!

I am a big fan of overcrowding CA/SA cichlids to reduce aggression. As long as I keep up my weekly water changes, I've NEVER had a problem. Some of these guys are 12+ inches:

I think that reducing aggression by overstocking should be experimented with using ALL fish species. Obviously, there are issues with water quality, but drip water change systems and crazy filteration will make short work of the issue.

i have a 55 with

8"oscar 6"jd 3"jd 4"con 4" blood parrot,,,,

they get allong fine, there water is changed 50% every week, feeding is done twice a day and i have no agression problems, hmm. is it just mine or do blood parrots seem to grow extremly fast!!!!

Ill tell you, I was leery, until I saw repairs 265, now I full endorse it and will use the practice as soon as I get a wet-dry, if you can't afford the filtration, then I would not advise it, WC's of 50% twice a week are a handfull.....I overfilter the shat out of everything I do.......

Repair, Truth is truth brother, My Babies are happy, thats all I can ask for.....Now get me my Wet-Dry!!!

From personal experience it worked for me fopr a while but then fell apart. I had a RD, GT, Myan, Jag, JD, LSN and some barbs as dithers. First The RD out grew everything in the tank, then the GT was getting owned and had to be moved. The Jag was cool and the Myan and JD fought continuously. They all had to be mooved to other tanks. The JD and the Myan are still together in my 125 with my pbass they still flare up but no real fighting.

I really cant answer why.... But tanks full of big cichlids like that totally turn me off, not my style at all... I prefer One, big show fish, OR a pair of show fish PER TANK.

The only large quantities of fish I like to see together are predatory shoals (Think Piranha for example)

But of course thats only my personal opinion.

GBG I remember the first time I saw that tank on here and almost fell off my chair. It's quite an accomplishment, and its obvious you take VERY good care of your fish. I will be getting ahold of you when I get ready to set up a giant tank (someday :naughty: ). Awesome job :WHOA:

Now I want to make it clear that as far as agressive fish go in my tank, I will not be considering RD's, Midas, Or anything else with a significant reputation as "killers." Not because I don't like them, I think they're very cool fish, but 1. I don't have the room, 2. I'm going to stick with fish under 10-12". BUT I REALLY want a nice male GT and know what they can be like, so I'm kinda stuck right now.

If I keep the JD and get a GT close to her size, I am convinced they will go head to head and battle it out. Probably will lose one of them...don't wana do that. So if I can find a home for her (JD) I can start adding fish that are all around the same size, and let them grow together. I am not worried about the firemouth's agression at this point

I am guessing that's how GBG started out. Wouldn't this be the best approach?

My vision is to eventually have a male GT "centerpiece" running the tank with other faster, smaller species that can hold their own (FM's and their relatives Thorichthys species)
