what type of fixtures do you use? Are they the big upright lamps with single bulb? Like the idea of replacing bulbs instead of an entire strip light. The 10 gal perfecto light I have is 20 years old.

These are the lights inwas talking about.

I've seen some people just dump the whole bottle in there. I guess that's what I'd need to do? I've done with by the dosing instruction before on nite out and it didn't help at all.

I'll wait until next week because the cycle is screaming fast now. I might not need any help from safestart.

I would be cautious about the cycle could be that the seeded media you added is doing its thing or your testing water from and established tank (thst was dumpes intk the new tank) and getting false readings.

The whole bottle of safe start is needed for a ew cycle (8 oz)

New light came in this weekend and I like it a lot. I still need to figure out how to work the different settings but I'm happy with it. I bought 5 bunches of java fern today and ziptied them to rocks for now. I got a wire brush today and tonight I'll scrub down the large piece of driftwood I found a few weeks ago. It's going to be hell getting it into this aquarium but it will look really nice. I'm going to boil water in a kettle and pour the boiling water over it several times. Tomorrow I'll tie on the java fern and we'll see if this wood is going to work out. Will I know if this wood is aquarium safe over night or is it something that could bite me in the butt a month from now? It really and truely looks to be aquarium safe. I'm really nervous about the wood. It could cost me a couple hundred dollars in fish. Once I get this sorted out I'll be making a fish order.

Oh btw I'm fully cycled!

hope everything works with the wood. As far as knowing whether or not it is aquarium safe, I'm not sure. my guess is that you would find out over time. There could be some bacteria in it, but with preparing it, it should probably be safe?

Is there anyway you could soak it in a bathtub before putting it in your tank? That at least will help leach out the tannins.

Just scrubbed it with a wire brush and it's in the bath tub right now. I'm boiling water to pour over it and then I'll fill up the tub. I think it's a huge root. I'll post a picture of it after I pour the boiling water on it. I broke off a long piece of it and it was hard, light colored, and very dry. I'll post a picture of the freshly broken cross section.
