Sarah, i think you read my mind, i was just talking about getting more driftwood, since i only have a few. Ya you are correct about the geos. Ya i do have carbon, and i actually heard that like a week ago and was kind of shocked.
I've put my hand in the tank and didn't feel anything, but i know that not the best judgement, i can check everything over tonight, it would either be the heater or the pump.

I am going to increase the amount of varied diet, but i don't think it is caused by stress in my case. I am going to try more natural things first and if i don't see anything soon, i guess he will go in my 46 for treatment, which won't make him very happy at all since he is a 14" oscar.

Thanks for all the help
your welcome..i forgot to add ..the most important thing of all... take out all uneaten food right away... and water changes on a regular schedule

yep, i feed small amounts and he cleans up everything. I am always on time with my water changes, sunday or monday every week.:)

yeah that sounds like a plan, hopefully if you change some of that stuff around and take out the carbon then it will go away and if not then yours might be one of the rare cases where it is actually caused by the HITH parasite and you can treat it with meds

The carbon will be out tonight, i will check the pump and heater, and double check my temp with a different thermometer. But its probably my luck its the hith parasite. I should have the piece of driftwood by next week.

I forgot to say that the tank has good water circulation and surface agitation. I will keep everyone updated, and will probably post pictures tonight.

I want to throw in my 2 cents about the pH... Although oscars are south american and hail from soft slightly acidic water, store bought oscars are far from similar to their wild counterparts. Most store bought oscars are farm raised and have been bred through generations of high pH water. My tap water has a pH of 8.0 as well, and I've had my oscar for almost 5 years with no signs of HITH or any ailment at all for that matter.

Geos are not as commercially available as oscars and therefore most are probably only a few generations from their wild ancestors so they may be more sensitive to the water quality.

Sometimes HITH is just plain inexplicable. I've seen several cases like this where water quality does not seem to be a factor yet the HITH wounds seem to keep progressing. In cases like this you need to observe anything that may be causing stress, as stress is a known factor in almost all diseases.

Thank you, that makes sense. i have wild geos, some over a year old with no sign of hith.
this might be far fetched, but about 2 months ago i sold two oscars out of the tank that i adopted and keep for about 4 months. Well the biggest reason for selling(giving away) besides tank size was because him(maybe she, i don't know) was trying to breed with one of the adopted, could this be a problem?
The tank sits in my room, so not to high of traffic besides me and my girlfriend, lights are normally on for ~12 hours, i never algea scrape cause of the pleco, and he is the only one that picks on everyone and its not often and all he does is flare up.

its better to have a steady ph than a lower ph.

that is only true if the "steady" Ph is already a reasonably healthy one for the fish in question . . . try keeping Rams at a steady Ph of 8.2, and I think you'll see what I mean . . . likewise, good luck keeping Rift Lake cichlids at a steady Ph of 6.2 . . . Oscars are pretty hardy, so they would certainly adapt better in any range from 6 to 8 . . .

the thing about Ph levels, hardness levels, or nitrate levels is that they don't "kill" necessarily, but if kept at the wrong levels, fish health may deteriorate over time . . . so this may have been building up over 2.5 years

I'm just brainstorming here, but that is the one thing that stood out to me . . . and if my tap Ph were 8.2, I'd be keeping Rift Lake cichlids

Have heard Oscars don't care for light much, Albinos more than others.
Maybe reduce lighting to times when there are people around to see it. Guessing it is not planted so ~12 hours seems unnecessary?
Call me :screwy:, but just finished reading high power bill thread.
Obviously not the issue, but might be adding some stress.

Yea it really may be the carbon. I was really annoyed by the tannins from my driftwood so I added carbon, then my Green Terror got HITH. I removed the carbon and the HITH went away.

he's not an albino, he is a red. There isn't even a fake plant in there. I over shoot on light, thats why i say ~12(somedays 4 somedays 12), and its only a 4" light with low watts so the tank is a low lit.
