why do you keep your Ph at 8.2? that seems unnecessarily high, and would certainly be at the outer-extreme level for any of the fish you are keeping . . . those aren't African cichlids

if it were my tank, I'd keep the Ph closer to neutral . . . I cannot think of any reason why is should be above 8 . . . is that they way the water comes out your tap?

I'm not saying this is the cause of any problems, but it could be something that has had a long-term negative impact on the fish's health . . . (?)
A one point reduction in PH is 10 times acidic. This is the basic thumbrule followed. What are you doing with 8.2 that nearly brackish.

Reduce your PH ASAP. MAX 7.4 for central american cichlids

First, Oscars are south american native to amazon waters.

Second, for most pet store/captive bred cichlids, a wide range of pH is acceptable. My pH for example has tested between 7.8 - 8.0 and I have kept both Central and South American cichlids without much trouble.

Third, brackish? Could you explain why a high pH is "nearly brackish" water?

yeah he explains why, and its SAs that like soft acidic water, most CA love the hard/basic water (which an oscar is SA so your point is still valid just a slight geographical error that might throw some people off)

and yeah brackish has to do with salinity not hardness

Ya my thoughts exactly, I was going to ask the same questions but I kept it simple cause I am on my phone. :screwy:

I had nothing to do with that post . . . sorry he even quoted me . . .

ok, he i finally have everything perfect to see if the HITH will go away.
I just switched my tank over to play sand (lower stress from eating since he filters rocks threw his gills), i add a large piece of driftwood (about 24"x13"x12") with my other two smaller pieces, i lowered temps to around 76-78(its kinda warm here so it can get hard to lower), and his new diet consists of NLS pellets, Night crawlers, red worms, wax worms, frozen food, and algea wafers (not all at the same time). So i am hoping his HITH clears. I will post new pictures of the tank here, when the sand clears.

ok sounds good, that play sand is probably going to be a big PITA but hopefully it works for you, GOOD LUCK hopefully he starts to show some good improvement so you wont have to use meds
