Yea it really may be the carbon. I was really annoyed by the tannins from my driftwood so I added carbon, then my Green Terror got HITH. I removed the carbon and the HITH went away.

The tannins are annoying, but if it helps then i will live with it. I will pissed if it is caused by carbon because i still have another 20 lbs:irked:

I over shoot on light, thats why i say ~12(somedays 4 somedays 12),

Oh, geez. That's a clear source of stress. Buy a timer, man. They're 2$ at the thrift store. Your fish need regular cycles of day and night. If he thinks it's winter one day and summer the next, well you get the picture.

ya i need to, i'm on time with everything, but my girlfriend, ya not so much.:irked: I will come home to work and see the lights off. But that is still once in a while, normally (i mean atleast days a week) the lights are on anywhere from 11-12 and off by 11ish. I need to buy some times, i had 2 and they both broke after 2 weeks.

Oh, I see. Get the white and gray Intermatic timers. They seem to never die.

. . . and if my tap Ph were 8.2, I'd be keeping Rift Lake cichlids

actually, that's not true, I'd probably keep CAs

saw the threads about lights, and yeah, that could be a factor

do you have any pics of the Oscar? would be good to see what stage the HITH is at . . .

I had to look this up just to double-check, but are you sure you are not observing "sensory pits" (see link, go to bottom of page) ?

hmm, could be i thought about that first then jump to the conclusion of hith after seeing more than a couple patchs, but after seeing that picture it makes me wonder, because he has a bunch of patchs, But it does kind look like he has nostral erosion. I'm going to feel like an idiot if its sensory pits. would it really take 2.5 years for them to finally show up, i pay close attention to him, and it seems like the last month he has gotten a bunch of these patches

hey thanks for the last post because all of my oscars have these sensory pits and i thought all of then had hith but only one does and my jag has it to
they were both fish that i took from my lfs because i knew no one had a tank big enough for them
im a sucker for a fish in need of a good home
im trying a varied diet right now with mine and they seem to stay the same
i have also tried medication and the taking out of the carbon filter and nothing seems to work
but im glad to see that my fish all dont have hith
