OSCAR IN A 40 GALLON? [PLEASE HELP!]

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Dempsey do not grow vey fast like Oscars. It took 2 years for my Jack Dempsey to get 11 inches. As for it liveing in a 40 breeder for life, IMO a JD should be in aleast a 55 gallon.
55 Gallons have TERRIABLE dimensions for cichlids IMO the 40 breeder has better dimensions cause of the width...

A 40 breeder is a much better tank for an oscar then a standar if you plan to upgrade you want atleast a 75. To keep the 18 in width

yes the with iis good but u also got to look at the length too, a fish thats gets 10+inch in a 3 ft long tank does not give very much swimming room

Hey, here's something off the wall....Erythrinus erythrinus. The red wolf fish. It gets about 8" and would be a BEAST...not very active though? That's aggressive. Any comments if he could house it for life in that 40? I'm not real sharp on wolfies...always wanted one though.

I actually Thought about a wolf but you dont EVER find em around where live and when you do , better bring a packed wallet...

So, I have an empty 40 gallon and I KNOW That it cannot house an oscar for life...

So, How Long Could One Last in a 40 BREEDER???
(the reason for this is cause, my family REALLY wants a large AGGRESSIVE cichlid for their 40 gallon!)

(THE OSCAR WILL BE THE ONLY THING IN THE TANK)

ANY INPUT???

DO a 40-50% wtaer change every week........Bare tank means no gravel and no sand...........40 gallon breeder, I would say two Aqua Clear 70 HOB's and a cnister filter............Try building a DIY wet'dry filter, it is really easy..........

How would an 18in depth tank stunt an oscar in 6 months?

It won't. People on here are idiots, and they just automatically think "Oh noez.....not a 40 gallon! Even oscar fry need a minimum of 75 gallonz!!!1!!!"

It's an 18" wide tank he's talking about here people. It'll be fine in there for a good while as long as the water perameters are kept in check with LARGE FREQUENT water changes.

If you don't want a slow grower, don't get a Nandopsis Grammode. They are SUPER slow growers. But they would be a great fit for this tank. One of my favorite fish.

I'd also second the notion for a green terror. They're slow growers as well, though.

Jeff Rapps has some over at Tangledupincichlids.com...35 beans for a 3.5-4" wolfie plus shipping...probably another 35 bucks or so. I doubt you are going to find any of these fish at a LFS, probably forced to buy online. I have no idea if Rapps is underwater though?
