Oscar Question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Update on my little monster. He’s eating anything I put into the tank, but still a little skiddish. Going to go with bug bites for a month straight to get him used to eating a pellet. I want to keep him in QT until he’s about 5” or so, so he can easily get food in my 180. With 50% weekly water changes and 14x turnover (I know it’s overkill, but I was planning for a ray, so there’s 2 canisters on a 55) how long should I expect it to take for him to reach that 5” mark?

He’s currently about 2-2.5”

Depends on a few factors like genetics and how much you're feeding. First of all be sure to treat him for intestinal parasites while you have him in QT. That will eliminate anything stealing nutrition from him. I brought up 2 juviniles to the 5inch mark so far. Took around 3-4 months with keeping the water pristine and feeding 3-4x a day.

I've only raised those 2 tho so certainly get more input.

Personally I like the albino Oscar over the red. But the best in my opinion is the tiger Oscar. I find the color variations of these fish to be amazing. I have a pair of tiger oscars in my 75 gal and they look great swimming around, although my one looks like he could be a hybrid of tiger and red.
