oscar ramming my filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey bro I used some of my kids plastic multi colored letters that float. I mean those big ones that the kids put on a easle type thing- The Oscars liked them.

just a thought bro Hey I can tell you what else I did if you have a few bucks. there is a company called Universal habitats, they make 3D backgrounds, some of which are flat. Whats cool about these is they are made of the stuff/plastic polymer which mean they sink and can thus be placed "Without Silicon" needed, in an existing tank. They look great too. what this has done for me is everything is now behind the 3D background and not getting banged into by the fish. Ck em out

Good Luck Bro

i figured out my oscar despises anything that is orange (he is a tiger oscar with a lot of orangey red on him). i gave him a floating orange plastic ball and he loves to snap at it and chase it around the water surface. he also bites at and makes the rena canister intake fall into the tank all the time (the top part of the intake after he does this is always underwater so i don't worry about the filter running dry). he pretty much ignores the aquaclear hob intake. he pushes his plastic resin log around the tank, and grabs the plastic plants with his mouth and plays with them. i also have a golf ball, but haven't put it in the tank yet. i don't leave the orange ball in the tank all the time, only put it in once or twice a week, so my oscar doesn't get bored with it.

stop with the feeders. they are fatty and have a high level of thiamanese, which blocks the b1 vitamin from being absorbed into the oscar's system. b1 is important for keeping HITH (hole in the head) away. plus, feeders are so full of parasites and diseases!!! not worth it to risk your fish's health. if you want to feed live food, breed livebearers in another tank and feed them instead. livebearers don't contain the high thiamanese level, and you can rest easy knowing your live food supply is disease free if you raise them yourself. live worms are also a good choice, and you can get them at most big box pet stores. i get a container of meal worms now and then, and am looking for a safe supply of nightcrawlers too.

with an oscar and a JD in a 75 gallon, i wouldn't be adding anything that would take away from the water volume (as a 3D background would). that size tank is the bare minimum for just the oscar, and with the JD in there too, you want all the space and water volume you can get. filtration needs to be big too. I'm running a rena xp4 and an aquaclear 110 on my tank, and it houses the oscar and a nearly full grown paratilapia polleni.

Hey bro. Why are you trying to sell me some bull**** that I didnt even ask about?

WOW Just offering a potential solution. The only reason is your ramming problem is common. This company I named, of which I have no relationship to or financial interest in, manufactures a solution that worked for me. Thin,< 1/2 inch, flat sinking background that all your stuff can be placed behind= THATS IT.

Hey man if you don't want solutions then maybe you should not ask for advise.

a 3d background is not the solution. I can see maybe a ball or something to keep him occupied but a 3d background is ridiculous. advertisements are for google not for discussions in a thread

To be honest it could be a solution, if you get it thick enough the intake might disappear enough for him to forget about it and it might give him something else to bite, ram, etc. It might calm him down by putting something interesting in the tank for him and will be more pleasant for you to look at too.
You shouldn't jump down someone's throat for naming a company, I have done it if they worked out for me and so do many people. It doesn't mean you are affiliated with that company in anyway other than being a customer.

+1 OP you're a Dbag for the way you responded, can tell you're a great person to be around, either way if the oscar in your avatar is your oscar it is beautiful. and i'm surprised tank size hasn't been mentioned yet...
