I currently have a 500 gallon setup thats 5ftx3ftx2.5ft that is home to one lone 15in old as dirt oscar. My lfs just got in a 10in dovii, which is a fish i have always wanted but didnt feel like growing one out. i would only need to keep them in the 500g for about 4 months untill i move the dovii into a bigger setup. What are the oscars chances of survival? the oscar isnt a mean one but hes not a pushover either. would his size be enough to keep him alive for the few months or do you think the dovii will go seek and destroy mode on him?

Well, if it’s only for a month or so, maybe.
The Dovii might not have time to setup territory.
Although what’s more likely is the Dovii will turn agressive and take over.

More then likely you’ll have to utilize a divider. Give them both half the tank and it will work for a temp setup. Btw did u mean to type 5ft length? Because the measurements you gave is closer to like 280 gallons.

I’d probably find a way to divide them. I know Doviis usually turn psychotic around that size and whether it’s the first day they are together or the thirty first, one day it will most likely execute your Oscar. Especially if it’s the only fish of a similar size in the tank. They seem to enjoy the strategy of killing tank mates in the sickest ways possible. You can pickup egg crate from Home Depot relatively cheap and rig it up for a makeshift divider with zip ties. Cuts pretty easy, and is fairly easy to rig together.

i gave wrong measurements, tried doing it from memory lol. 7ft long 3.5 wide 3 deep. its actually 480g if if i remember correctly.

Old adult large Oscars are one of the rarest fish about, unlike juvenile/ semi adult dovii. Personally wouldn't risk it, if you do make sure you have a divider in the tank

The smaller one is a safer bet, I’d still have a divider ready just in case. That’s a bad ass tank for on solo Oscar haha

Am I the only one who thinks a 15" oscar could possibly eat a 5" dovii?

I'm thinking even the smaller dovii might cause trouble for the oscar.

I’ve never actually seen a 15 inch Oscar, my two oscars are both over 10 years old and even my largest one only pushes 13. And he is over 15 years old. I think the OP is just guessing the length.

But your totally right, he could wreak havoc on a shy type Dovii at 5 inches. Just depends, my Oscars, if they can’t eat it in the first 5 minutes of being in the tank. They just give up and ignore it lol. I have a 2 inch Carpintis in with my two oscars right now lol
