Oscar with HITH...Help...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I have been treating my O with the primafix and melafix which are both organic material. I have also been looking into nitrate reducers. I came across the purigan pouch to put in the filter but I cannot use it until I am done with the med treatment because it reduces organic materials such as primafix and melafix. So I would be working against myself. I am going to continue the med treatment for a full week (total of two week treatment) and see where my O is at with his health and then install a nitrate reducer I made. Should I continue the med treatment longer? I found a forum where a guy made a nitrate reducer from a 32 oz bottle, some tubing, a small pump, some purigan, and filter pads.

I made one up last night and put it to the test and seems to be working well. I am thinking about putting it on my 75 gallon which is high in nitrates and not under any treatments except for a purigan pouch in the filter. I can est the results and see if it really does do me any good.

I took a few days off from major w.c. and stressing the fish and myself. Just been watching the nitrates and the daily dose of meds. My Os health seems to be improving a great deal. His one eye is clearing up, way more active, and he has been eating (even the little pellets). He hasn't been messing with the plants that I can tell but the sand has been moved out of his spot in the tank so he is doing some digging. :D

Ok so the o is ripping plants out and being active. Starting to look a lot better and I have gotten the nitrates down to 13 ppm. So there is progress.
The reactor I made and put on the 75 leaked so I had a repair job to do but I will get it running tonight. I tested the h20 in the 75 last night and we were close to 40 ppm. Did a water change, added puritan to the filter and I will see what it looks like tonight.

You could probably just add the purigen to your current filtration instead of trying to isolate it in a bottle. If you have room, that is.

Knifegill I 86ed the bottle idea. It wouldn't stop leaking on me. In the 75 I have a cascade 600 running so I replaced the media in there to try an get the same effect. I was just proud of myself for making a cleaver device.
I have gotten the Nitrates in the 55 down to about 10ppm so that is exciting.

I made it a couple months with a little break from the HITH but in the past couple days it has come back with vengeance. It is not good this time. I know that I did not get rid of the HITH from the last out break it has been an on going up hill battle(not to mention expensive). It has been very costly and I have not seen a very positive result. Unlike my past experiences with HITH I would get a satisfactory result.
I have never fought this disease so freaking hard as I have with this O. I was not aware he had HITH when I got him.
So this time around I have him moved to a ten gallon tank being treated with general cure for the next 48 hours. After that 48 hours are up I will do a W.C. and drop another treatment of general cure in for 48 hours (as instructed).
Two treatments are supposed to fix this issue. I will let you know.
After the second treatment I will be moving him back to his tank and within 24 hours doing a 25% W.C. and a nice dose of malefix and primfix.
So I need suggestions please? Do this and the way I outlined?

His eye was actually almost all cleared up and it has turned into what you see in about three days.

Looking forward to hearing from you guys.

P.S. Since I have been doing a 25% W.C. every week with water from my buddies well with awesome perimeters my nitrates have not been over 15 ppm. That is the only other water quality issue I have had and fixed.

Anybody???

OMG, dude. This is terrible. You are clearly doing pretty much everything you can. Have you tried giving him lots of crickets and earthworms? That could encourage tissue growth. Your food choices are excellent and it's really not fair that he's getting HITH again so soon.
