Oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh they are all in a 55 gallon, wow. I didn't know that. One oscar can barely fit in a 55 gallon. Due to being overstocked I think that is why your oscar is getting HITH. You should get a bigger tank for them. I know you don't realize you are overstocked but you are, please get a bigger tank or think about getting rid of some fish. Having all those fish in one tank will mess up your water parameters creating ammonia, nitrites and high nitrates. Please consider thinking about your options so you have a healthy tank.

Thanks for the suggestions but my O & con get along great. The con is not even an adult nor the O or the pleco.

I wil post pic tonight...

You asked for help, you were given correct information, what you choose to do with it is up to you. It's not about how they get along, it's about keeping them healthy. Good luck with them.

Ok...I can understand but let me ask this question:

What is the purpose of a pleco if they poop just as much as the O?
( I just saying looking at ppl pics of there tanks and there is alot of pleco's with O's)

I am just askin a question...

Suggestion: what size tank should I upgrade to...currently i have 3...10,29& 55

Pleco's are generally sold to clean tanks, however that is kind of an old wive's tale because they produce more waste than they eliminate. If you like plecos then keep them just don't do so thinking they will help keep your tank clean.

If you want to keep those three fish you could get by with a 90 gallon but I would go with a 125 to give them more swimming room. I know it sounds like a waste of space but it is our job to provide them with satisfactory conditions, the fish did not ask for us to buy them and keep them in a glass box.

For what it's worth I keep two fish in a 210 gallon tank and one fish in a 55 gallon tank so I do practice what I preach.

*edited to say that eventually the pleco will outgrow the 90 gallon tank. Those things get big!

I hate to admit it, but I am doing a similar thing with my poor O and Black shark. Both are only around the 3" mark, butI mistreat them bad. When I purchased them they went into a 10 gal QT tank which was the plan for about a week. My plans are to put them a pleco, and a pair of BGJD in a 125. My plans got derailed when the 125 started leaking. I tore the tank completely apart, and ordered new top/bottom plastic for it since both pieces were cracked anyway. The plastic pieces should be in tomorrow, and I plan on picking them up at the fish store. Whatever day I am off next week I will rebuild the tank. After that a few days for the silicone to cure and at least 2 weeks of holding water outside in the driveway. Then my 125 can come in ang get setup. My poor fish will have suffered at least a month and a half by the time they get the home that they deserve.

I AM DOING 50% WATER CHANGES ON THEIR LITTLE TANK AT LEAST 3 TIMEAS A WEEK. SOMETIMES THEY GET THEM DAILY WHEN I HAVE THE TIME.

Sometimes things happen, sounds like you are doing your best though. Good luck.

You are doing your best, these things happen and you could not predict this. At least your doing something about it.
