Its a shame that things are the way you say in your area but if you do get a dog it might be better to keep it inside your home.It could be poisoned or killed some other way if would be theives know or think they know when you are not around and if they approach your doors or windows the barking should turn them away especially if they have no idea of the dog type.I dont know if a pit bull would be your choice but I disagree with the poster who said that they are hard to train and in my area people actually steal them right out of the yard they are intended to protect.

Thanks everyone for the there comment. I would like to make thing a little bit clearer. The dog i'm getting is gonna be a house dog. It is only gonna be outside for jus one hour per day when the wife come back. I will take all my time to train this dog and have a couple of guy who will help me to. All your comment are giving a better idea of what to get.

i used to have a ridgeback who was really mellow most of the time but if he sensed something was a threat to anyone in my family, especially my mom and younger brother, he would immediatly confront the threat both vocally and occasionally physically, we once had a questionable guy ring our doorbel and my brother stupidly stated to open the door, the dog came out of nowhere and looked like he was ready to kill the guy

Most menacing looking dog I've ever seen.. Cane Corso Italiano. That said it's a breed that needs a ton of stern training I believe. Doberman's and Rottweilers are also old school guard dogs and while most aren't mean people still tend to think of them that way. Pit bulls same deal, most people are deathly afraid of a larger pitbull or anythign that resembles one. But as said with pit bulls due to illegal activity if you live in a bad neighborhood I might stay away from pit bulls because they could be stolen.

Honestly as said any dog over about 60lbs is a pretty good deterent for theives. Most will bond with you and out of nature bark at anything that moves outside the house.

There are tons of nice dogs. And while they're not a security system or a weapon they can be a good sense of security. Might also invest in a hand gun in case something makes it past the dog pending how bad of a time you're having in your neighborhood.

I own a couple of hand guns and hunting gun so i not worry about they coming inside just worry in case they attack my family from outside

Protection dogs, defo not a pit, they are not protection dogs, though they can be trained to do anything cause they are ace. Best dogs in my opinion are the boebel or fila or a bandog (pit cross neopolitan mastiff or such like). These are SERIOUS dogs though, and if you dont know what your doing and screw them up, your gonna need a pit to protect you from them! What ever dog you get they need time and love. Prob best going for something a bit down the scale like rottie or gsd, but many mongrels will do a really good job. Meanest yard dog we ever had was a mongrel. What ever dog you get though you need to spend time learning and training or you'll end up in trouble. If you go for a big dominant bred get a *****. It makes a big difference...

An English mastiff nothing is more intimidating. I had one as a kid it was very friendly, but protective. I'm not a big fan of german shepards statistically they account for the most attacks on humans and have a tendency to attack smaller breed dogs.

If you and your wife work 2 shifts, who's gonna take care and train the dog?

I know it's for protection, but beforehand, you need to consider a large amount of time you spend with the dog. If you don't train your dog right, whatever breed it might be, you might just end up a victim by it.

I have a purebred, championship line show pitbull, not those super stocky ones with hip dysplasia and other hip problems and a mutt from the pound. Both were raised together from puppies at 2 months old and the pitbull is a baby and as a terrier, only chases birds and other small animals. The mutt is the only one who barks at people passing by and she's got a intimidating bark.

Point is, it's not just the breed, it's also who owns the dogs that also shapes the dogs character. Research and get ready like you're having a baby.

Get a Monster Dog like a Great Dane! They can be trained as Guard Dogs too. I had a neighbor when I was younger that was a dog trainer for the K-9 Police Force here in Maryland. He had his Great Dane trained the same way. He never had to put it in a kennel or anything. When the family left the house he stood by the window and stared out it all day until they returned home. He never barked either, just watched and waited by the door.
