outdoor native tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I just picked up the tank. I am thinking of what to use for a filter or how that is going to work. I want to build something to protect it though. The tank does have a overflow built in it. I am going to buy some type of stone and wood to have the tank on so it is not on concrete or just the ground.

any ideas for filtration?

Just ordered the fish, bunch of mosquito fish, blue gill, pumpkinseed and crappie. will see how this goes.

Your going to end up with some fat, happy sunfish, and no mosquito fish...

As far as breeding, the sunfish are likely gonna need some type of substrate to dig a nest into. They also are seasonal spawners, so you may only get one spawn a year.

Well I hope I dont lose all the mosquito fish, I got 100 of them.

You think a gravel substrate will do or do they need sand? I was planing on doing a thin layer of small gravel and stack up rocks real high so it almost looks like a bank of a lake or something and add some fake plants and/or live water plants that do good outdoors.

Why not just breed convicts for feeders? Much easier process.

You can't just stick all those fish in that tank and expect them to breed. You should focus on a single species. There are also a lot of info out there on breeding minnows that you may wanna look into.

because convicts need heat and are more expensive to buy at LFS. I am getting these fish from $ .30-1.00 each.

As for throwing them all in, I see your point. It is just a large tank for 1-2" fish if I breed them only. Want to keep it safe and natural for the mosquito fish to breed but also add more fish often found in the same waters. If I see something not working, I can move them around but your right, the main thing I want is breeding. That is the main purpose.

I mean people breed these fish in 5 gallon tanks to 20 gallon tanks but normally smaller in size. a 4x2 is a big difference in surface area for the fish.

4x2 is still not big enough to succesfully breed bluegills and the like. Very aggressive at spawning time.

How many of each did you get, and what is your filtration? 100 mosquitofish is already overstocked for a 100 gallon tank, never mind adding Crappie, Bluegill and Pumpkinseed.

Realistically a 100 gallon could support between 5-10 sunfish (depending on species). I really hope you didn't go out and order 30 fish or something

100 mosquito fish at less than an inch, just tiny little guys. Im going to call and cancel the LMB and reduce #'s of the sunfish. I planned on 1 crappie, 1 pumpkin and 5 bluegill.

I will post pics soon to show progress.

Filtration is an XP4 as of now but trying to figure out how this overflow thing works so I can use that too.

You realize that crappie are minnow eating machines right? I really don't see this working, the sunfish are going to tear up the mosquito fish very quickly. You shouldn't try to house predators with prey that your trying to breed.

As for the overflows, they are used with a sump, not a canister filter.
