100 mosquito fish at less than an inch, just tiny little guys. Im going to call and cancel the LMB and reduce #'s of the sunfish. I planned on 1 crappie, 1 pumpkin and 5 bluegill.

I will post pics soon to show progress.

Filtration is an XP4 as of now but trying to figure out how this overflow thing works so I can use that too.

Ok

I think you would be better with 1 crappy, 5 pumpkin and 1 bluegill. The pumpkins don't get as big so you can fit more of them. 5 Bluegill, full grown, will probably be too big for that tank. Plus, pumpkins are more colorfull and look better in a tank, imho

You realize that crappie are minnow eating machines right? I really don't see this working, the sunfish are going to tear up the mosquito fish very quickly. You shouldn't try to house predators with prey that your trying to breed.

As for the overflows, they are used with a sump, not a canister filter.

I would buy a smaller tank to use as a sump, then have an open area for the mosquito fish. I'd go with something like a 55g sump to allow plenty of room for media & living space for the fish.

Okay well I will see when I pick the fish up tomorrow. One big question is..... the acrylic tank has 2 big openings on top but the tank came with covers to keep the top sealed.. but since it is outside should I leave the tops off so bugs and rain can enter the tank via those 2 openings... or should I use the covers and keep the surface free of rain and bugs. Thanks

Oh.. and I cancelled the xp4 and ended up ordering a fx5 for it... what do you think

based on my observations with my own aquarium.... any bluegill...crappie...or bass will be eating your minnows. especially the bass. my bass were eating rosys when they were 2 inches....i know you said you were getting rid of the bass on you order. but may i ask why your breeding feeders? because if its to save money on feeding your other fish how many feeders will you have to go through to cover the fx5 and aquarium? im sure over time it would be worth it though but not if you were feeding blue gill and crappie in your breeding tank. as for the holes in the top of the aquarium i would let the rain water in myself. the water perams in my rain barrel are actually much better than my tap..anyhow best of luck with whatever you decide to do. hope every thing works out.

What size is your tank and the stock? Yes I canceled the bass and reduced the sun fish. ya breeding the fish to feed my other fish nutritious food to save money from going to the store. Okay I will not cover the top holes and let the rain and bugs have its way. thanks, appreciate it.

anyone seen blue gill or pumpkin with arowanas?

Ive seen an aro eat a bluegill....

75 gallon aquarium, 5 gallon fathead minnow tank ( just to hold a few minnows for the occasional feed) 29 gallon hopital tank. and a 55 galln rain barrel for more minnows. my stock includes crappie, green sunfish, pumpkin seed, lm bass, bullhead, fathead minnows, and currently a brook stickleback.

all together a bad idea.. ill just say it. its gona be a mess.. IF you do decide to do this I would have a water line from your garden hone maybe dripping in the tank at all times to keep it cool.. native fish dont do well in 90 degree heat waves.. even if they are rare heat waves.
