Over heard some bad advice at petsmart

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Today was my first day working at petsmart, a guy was looking for a dechlorinator product and I directed him to get some Prime, explained the benefits over other products blah blah blah. While I was talking to him a co-worker came up and told him to just get the top-fin dechlorinator as unless there was an ammonia problem why bother using more chemicals. I was pisssssssed..

Another guy came in and said his Oscar had died after about 7 years and I quote "he was in a 35 gallon tank so he had plenty of room to swim, he was probably about 9 inches long when he died, 7 years is pretty impressive" - All i could think about was how ridiculously stunted that fish would have to be to only reach 9" in 7 years...

one lady at petsmart, very nice lady (fish dept.) that over time would be friendly etc. but just the facts irritate you!..when i was first looking for my first oscar, i was getting a 55 gal, and not fully knowing the size limitations on these guys, wanted to buy a couple of them, but thought first of asking the people there on thier opinion.
well, for 15$ a piece and me wanting 2-3 of them, what did they say? "oh yea, you could even get a few more oscars in the 55, its more than enough!" well well, cought in the act, i did my research and just wanted to see how uneducated and desperate to sell someone was. just irks me...so im always quizzing people like that :D
although i still love petsmart, just wish people were more egar to be educated..:nilly:

cause if you can get over the horrible advice given there, and you know what you're looking for, there are some good petsmarts out there. (as far as health of the fish go and such)

Thank you.

I only hope that you punched the employee in the face and beat him to the ground, all while yelling "I am right! I'm a member of MFK.com! I'm right!" Stole the petsmart shirt and put it on and continued to work their shift until they found a marine biologist to to take their place.

 :headbang2 Thank you

I've overheard so much bad advice at all the big corporate stores. Sometimes to make a sale but I think most of the time I think they just don't know and are repeating what was told to them. One guy was interested in a couple oscars. He was told 3 or 4 oscars would be fine in his 55g. Ok, that's not the bad part. He asked about something to go with his oscars for more color in his 55g. The employee suggested getting a couple blue Ahli and a blood parrot to live with his oscars :screwy:!!!! I'm not saying that would be impossible in a very large tank but in a 55g :WHOA:!!!! I don't know how this story ended up--I had enough and had to leave. I grabbed up my algae tabs and made way to the register.
Most of the lfs in my town are very good about keeping healthy stock. They just give rotten advice for a quick sale--besides if you ask them 55g is huge!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the posts guys--keep em' coming,
Chris

I was able to talk a customer out of buying an oscar for his 40 tall today fortunately

- aparently the guy that interrupted me about prime told a manager that i cut him off when he tried telling them to just get 'regular dechlorinator' -___-

The guy told the manager that I interrupted him when he was trying to tell the customer I was wrong, I told her that I would make sure not to say anything to anybody he was talking to anymore, my managers are all really good so i didnt get in trouble or anything, so far working there has been pretty enjoyable actually
