I've finally got everything running and some start fish in the tank. It seems that my overflow is putting more water in to the sump then the pump can pump. I'm using 1" pcv piping and Quiet One Pumps 3000. I don't know if I should just add more water to the tank or if I have to change something. I am going to get another plastic drawer to help lift the bio media out of the water. Here are some pictures. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

the overflow by definition, can not put out more water than the pump

x2. It's inherently impossible for an overflow to outpace the pump.

Once the water level drops low enough in the tank, the overflow stops working. Do you actually have an overflow or is the water just siphoning down into the sump?

I copied pretty much what everyone else has done so I'm pretty sure its an overflow.

f i had to guess, id say your water level is too high.turn the pump off, and let the overflow drain until it stops. (keep an eye on your sump, so it doesnt overflow. better het a hose handy to siphon, just in case) when the overflow stops dumping water, turn the pump on. it should be working fine.

Thanks, I am giving that a try right now. Once I turn the pump on when should I start the overflow?

I always make sure the overflow can put more water into the sump than the pump can pump out then regulate it with a ball valve.

So far it seems to be running fine. I need to extend the pipe coming into the tank for return. It's loud. I just hope the overflow doesn't stop. Now that I only filled the sump with a certain water level I shouldn't have a big mess if something does stop. Water level is a little low in the tank. Is it ok to just fill it?

I'm check valve doesn't seem to be working right it seems to suck water in and then air. I'm not sure if I sucked the excess air out... I sucked until everything started flowing.
