Overrated / Underrated Fish ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Overrated: Temensis pbass, pike cichlids, asian arrows, tigrinus, umbees

Underrated: "common" pbass types, common sheatfish, clown loaches, senegal bichers, convicts, and the most underated of all: mormyrids, especially "dolphin" types. Coolest fish ever, and nobody likes them or keeps them!!

And, nicely planted/aquascaped tanks with large predators is underrated!!

OVERRATED -

Pike cichlids
doviis
jags
piranhas
red devils and other cichlids that have big lumpy heads
African cichlids - small and boring. Good for feeders though
Wolf fish (hoplias) - just like a turd with teeth.

UNDERRATED -

Oscars- sure they are common, and there are better looking fish out there, but they are intelligent, funny and brave fish. They are a fun fish to keep.

Ctenopoma, spotted climbing perch.

Snakeheads - yes they are still rated highly, but underrated by many. They are the ultimate predator.

Comet goldfish - active, brightly coloured, cheap, voracious :D And grow to a decent size. Pretty good fish all in all.

PIctus catfish - small but pretty and aggressive and hyperactive.

Freshwater barracudas - These are REALLY underrated. I prefer these to vampire tetras and ATFs, mine were a really pretty irridescent gold, big eyes, big teeth, active, and nailed anything that moved that was somewhat small enough to eat. Really cool fish. I'm talking about the Acestrorhynchus species.

Fish such as arowanas, bichirs and peacock bass are neither under or over rated. They deserve their popularity.

wow, very well put. I almost completely agree (thought I think asian arrows are overrated). Yeah, after keeping a variety of other "tougher" predators, I still am very very happy with my acestrorhyncus. These guys, while maybe not as tough as an ATF, are just lightning fast and extremely entertaining and nice to look at in a tank. Definitely underated.

Overrated:

Piranhas (not Black rhom, just common Red Bellies, it'll be the first thing a "non-fishkeeper" would think of for a cool mean BADASS fish :D I get asked it all the time "do you keep Piranhas?" "I wanna get piranhas")

African Cichlids (very active, but they seem like colorful minnows, except for Paratilapia and Buttikoferi)

Oscars (so very common, overrated like Piranhas are, but WAY more interactive than a piranha could ever be....kinda underrated among really hardcore cichlid hobbyists since many disregard them totally or just have them as background fish.....I was surprised when I saw so many oscar lovers on this site :woot: ...compared to Cichlidmadness etc :) ) Oh yeah, the Oscar has the look I want in a BIG fish! Big eyes, big droopy mouth. Only thing missing is their aggression overall.

Underrated:

Jack Dempsey

Texas Cichlid (let's see some more full grown Texases...I see more people with flowerhorn texases rather than the originals or even the escondidos)

before you say Africans are overrated, check up on the ones your lfs dont keep, they arnt at all small monster some of them get over 12" and even bigger =) There are alot of them I bet you dont know about I think they are underrated the only ones I believe to be overrated are the ones found in a mix tank at your lfs =) Just thought Id throw that in I am an African lover what can I say.... =) but seriously I would agree with the smaller mix tank'd guys but a majority can be pretty cool!!

Also pirs are very overrated and I think fh are overrated.. they are not at all as agressive and intresting as people make them out to be.. they just grow fast. Parrots also.

Thanks

I'm glad you appreciate the acestros, they're brilliant fish aren't they? I've always like the look of them, but when I finally got a couple they exceeded my expectations.

I've had an ATF and a vamp tetra, and to me the acestro's speed and accuracy is unrivaled. The way they do that sonic-speed U-turn when catching prey is awesome :) They also used to take notice of me, and come to the front when I was coming with river shrimps or feeder fish. They are less vacant than many other characins.

BTW - have you seen any Asian aros in person? I've only seen one, an xback, and it was really a stunning fish, I could not take my eyes off it.

Piranhas r the MOST over ...not because they r timid more so depending on where you buy they buy them.. in the state of MA u can buy red bellies just under 2 inch for six dollars.. in Ma mind u they r not LEGAL.. the same fish in TN where they r legal can be up to 50 dollars
pending on the store i saw a 4inch today at 100 bucks in Ma i would pay 25 for the same

Sp when legal cost more? whats the hype

I meant assorted africans and the like....I like the big bruiser Africans...that you don't normally see in those tanks....like some Madagascar cichlids...polleni, bleekeri etc.

also I think Fronts are badass....

I still think Africans have the most beautiful colors in freshwater fish...only ones that can match the strong colors of saltwater fish.

everyone has their opinion though like me...which doesn't matter as long as you like ur fish and etc....I just thought it was weird how some people who used to own awesome huge tanks with SA/CA bruiser fish (jags, dovii etc) and they totally converted to pretty little african tanks and went crazy for africans. :)

If I ever get all my CA/SA I want in big tanks...I'd set up a an african tank for fun...but for now...I don't have the room....so gotta go with my favs...

but ur right...the overrated ones are the common ones everywhere..
