Well, I dont want to add another Jewel cichlid because I dont want the chance of breeding. Im also a bit worried about adding another smaller cihclid for chance of cross breeding. I dont know, Its either gotta be a smaller cichlid that doesnt have much in common with the Jewel or some other kind of fish not related at all.

I appreciate your desire to avoid hybridization, but not all fish can cross breed... You have a lot of safe options...

And please post pics (on a ruler) of all these massive BGKs... I hear so many people talk about them but not one that can back up the claims...

I was more worried about the pleco.

OP: You said you got a pleco to deal with algae....why a common then? I would find a new home for the common, and add a bristlenosed pleco or two. They stay small, and never stop eating algae. Plus, with their little barbs on the side of their heads, nothing messes with them.

if that is overstocked, i dont wanna know what you guys think of my setups :nilly:
agreed

the "they are gonna need a bigger tank" argument doesn't mean the tank is overstocked, it just means certain fish will eventually outgrow it ...
that pleco has a LONG time before it should need moved (i bought a 29g tank from a guy with a common pleco that was 6 years old, well over 14") not saying thats a good policy, but they don't swim a ton, and it could still move. he is in my 180 now, so he is better, but i wouldn't worry about him for a while. same with the knife, although they grow faster, i think many would agree a 55 is plenty of tank for the time being
then you just have one other fish?

my vote is WAY UNDERSTOCKED!!!
i have a 55 with about 25-30 cichlids, and 4 syndo's, and i could add more IMO
of course everything depends on your filtration (i didnt see what you have). i have about 200g worth of filters on my tank at the moment, so that helps ...

as for the jewel cichlid, i dont know about them as far as aggression / compatability, so i cant comment on "dont add another cichlid" argument ...
the BGK and pleco's dont swim around much, so thats a lot of tank to just have 1-2 other fish swimming around IMO. in my house thats a waste of water lol ...

Yeah it does seem a bit plain. As far as the Jewel Cichlid its mellow. I think the problem is either having breeding going on or jsut throwing incompatible fish together. Yeah the pleco wasnt long term, I knew they grew really big. I will keep him for awhile and get rid of him later. I may get a smaller species of plecos or may just forget the whole thing and not even get one.

Understocked IMO. Dont worry your Knifefish probably wont live long enough to get 18". Sorry but they aren't very hardy and grow slow IMO.

Thanks guys for posting the BGK pics/threads. I will admit I'm suprised to see two that big, but do note they are both around 15", not 18, not 20. Also note that in both threads members continually repeat "wow, I've never seen one that big". Impressive fish none the less...

Questionfor the OP... what kind of Jewel do you have? Would that be the W African Jewel that only gets about 5"? If it is the W African version then there is no risk of cross breeding with SA/CA CIchlids.
