I must say ... these threads are my guilty pleasure. Much more entertaining that the normal nice pick up new fish threads.

To the op or Wednesday. ... being able to manufacture your own set up.. must be a huge benefit. You say your a metal fabricator but also a self employed artist.. which is it?
You say to have massive massive tanks.. you dont nees loads of money.. that I agree..
But you WILL need loads of $$$ to feed the giant fish you really want.
Oh... forgot about the aquarium zoo calibre filtration and heating.. and foundations needed to set this tank up.. true the tank can be done from second hand but the other stuff I wouldnt skimp out on.
Sorry its not the answer.you want to hear.. but you also mention you go months on end with no income...

How could you possibly provide optimum care for such giant fish.

Where theres a will theres a way :) ....most of my monsters are fed turkey franks soaked in vitachem supplement, im an avid fishermen so there also fed live bluegill...i trap my own creek chubs for them so its actually cheaper for me to feed the monsters than my smalls. I make my own filtration and its just as good as anything else out there. As for my profession, i have a bachelors degree in Industrial Design and fine art from the #3 art school in the nation CCAD. Not being vain lol i put in alot of sleepless years to get my degree and am simply proud i stuck it out. My degree is basically everything thats y i chose it. I do computer modeling in CAD, prototypes, product design, welding, cnc work, any kind of fabrication (wood, metal, acrylic), airbrushing (t shirts-cars,motorcycles,signs), murals, sculpture, and anything else art related. So aquariums and this hobby uses just about every talent i have thats y i love it so much :)... i built my 650gal frame in college for a metal sculpture class lol so it was basically free. I cant stress enough to everyone to use what u have and what u can do and good things will come to you. One day ill be rich lol, i chose to run my own buisness rather than work for a design firm, but if times ever get too bad i can get a job basically anywhere i please in product design so no im not worried about money. I get by, something i do/make/invent will take off sooner or later, gotta b positive. So long story short im basically an inventor/engineer/artist.

Every product u use in ur everyday life was created by a person like me lol if that makes sense. Industrial Designers work hand in hand with engineers inventing cars, computers, phones, shoes, electronics, appliances, tools, buildings, furniture, displays etc. Etc. Etc.....google industrial design and the list is basically endless...i just chose to run my own buisness and do freelance work rather than be tied down into one genre of product design. I also enjoy working with my hands rather than on computers. I dont like seeing my inventions be made by someone else but will have to give in one of these days i cant do everything on my own.

sorry for the derail on industrial design lol....Im sure all of you are very proud of what you have a degree in aswell :) ....Most people just dont know or understand what Industrial Design or most art related design fields are so i had to clear that up. Some famous Industrial Designers are Frank Lloyd Wright , Buckminster Fuller, Charles Eames, Henry Dryfuss, & Raymond Lowey, These were some of the originators who helped build our country and some of their designs/inventions are still used today.

Here are a couple I saw in Japan a few years back...they were over 3 feet in diameter

Nice pic exoticfishguy! i'd kill for those platty gators :) trumps any ray in my eyes any day of the week. i have 5 regs lol....

You talk to much ;)

Haha if u met me in real life i dont say a word...

Agreed...im only thinking of a pair of something aswell. I've kept several motoros over the years up to a 22''er, just thinking of something different. In your opinion what is the hardiest larger size ray? I know some people have alot of trouble with the flowers. My price range is pretty humble aswell, leos are far from my reach as the whole tank will only cost me a bit more than the price of one leo pup lol... u guys are truely dedicated to spend $1500 and up for your prized specimen.

The most I have spent on a ray is 325 euro for one ray in my tank the rest I bred myself

I did pay £800 for a bd male last year and to tell the truth I can justify that kind of money on a ray

You guys in the US pay silly money for rays

I don't think any ray is worth $1500
