Its all very well having a 3-10k tank but with rays its the foot print that counts not the gals

I completly understand your thoughts and such, I have been thinking for months that I would like to keep an arapaima in the future(after an upgrade or close to a much larger upgrade) which to me is about the same or actually a little smaller because of how large the actual disk would be and the foot print the ray would cover. I think the real issue with rays over all is how much space they need to actually move around and get some exercise, and I think that relates to overall health and how easy the rays are to keep. I applaud you with the keeping of only a few fish in a very large setup, Overall I feel its healthier for the fish and its what I like more as well anymore, more space for the fish to actually swim. Even in a 3000 gallon tank one of these large fish (thoughts of size- arapaima at 5 feet / ray 3.5 foot disk) does not have a huge area to swim around allot, could one be kept in there I am sure of that and it could probably be kept for a good long while, but to help the fish have the best chances in an aquarium setting I do not think at least with my style of fish keeping that I would do it. But that is just my personal thought and tastes thinking of keeping a super sized fish. Especially knowing that they have a good chance of getting even larger. But I do think one could be kept in one of your setups if that is what you want to do. Myself as of late I have put the arapaima thought out of my head as I know I will need to either do a really large renovation to my current house to make a tank that large or have to find a new home to have a setup that large. For now though I just need to just finish another tank to give me more room when I need it. Its the classic question of do I have the means and do I want to more then anything. Im just along to watch and enjoy the ride

Thankyou calgaryflames for solid information and kind words! Ill look into the species uve suggested. I am also farmiliar with insane bio loads and filtration as most of my stock is in the 24"-36" range.

I would check out the tigers and flowers. I know I intend too =)

1) they are big rays and from what I've been able to find in searching ( I admit i'm a research junky) and appreciate space.
2) in the US you just don't see alot of adults which suggest most people ARE trying to keep them unsuccessfuly in smaller enclosures. and the few who are keeping them successfully are for the most part quiet about it.
3) I'de swap pups w/ you anyday once I can decide on who stays and goes in the pool and its matured awhile, as I absolutely want to try a trio in the pool of one or ther other.
4) they get a rep for being more timid then other rays so really shouldn't be kept with other rays ( I'm sure there are exceptions, and i've seen some pictures floating around)

For whatever reason they just aren't as desired as the black rays ( I'm guessing delicatness?) But command a similar price. Maybe soem of the more experianced ray guys can shed more light on it.

All this I will buy a bigger tank when needed is rubbish as most of the people who buy the above mentioned fish have no intention of building a 3k tank to house them

Im very rational or i wouldnt have asked for info on other species with similiar looks....i also stated even the thought of owning one is pretty ridiculous. What gets me is the people who join the hate party dont even have "real" tanks, 500-1000 and up. If u only have a 180 u dont deserve to have an opinion becuase uve never cared for fish over 30". We all know most of the fish we keep will never attain adult sizes in our lifetimes. Some will come pretty close and thats what we strive for. Let me ask u all this question? How many fish of monster proportions even make it to 5-10' mark in the wild? Personally i feel we keepers keep alot of fish alive that wouldnt make it one year in the wild due to deformities,health issues, etc. So y is what we do so wrong. Were supposed to all share information here and learn...not have a period becuase u think ur part of the epa. U people truely make me laugh...

That goes to the fact that people that get them can't house them and that they don't do research. That doesn't mean that we should be able to have them. If you can house them then more power to you. You can have most any fish in your country so you can say "oh I don't think they should be allowed. I can't have some fish here so I know what it is like to have the ability to care for something and not be able to have it. Once you are on that side of the fence you'll have different opinions.

perhaps one can grow an oak tree in a thimble as well?

If you try to raise an oak tree in a thimble then you didn't do proper research on the needs of that creature. There are members on here with the means to house such a fish if they choose to. Do I think they should be stocked at petsmart or Petco, no. Should they be made unavailable, no. If you do the research on a fish prior to purchasing it like should be done with all fish, then once you know what it takes, you can make the call.

Hey now I just recently joined the 1k club ... but I get what your saying.. kinda funny watching someone get whats being given to them. shoulda warned you about the ray sub-forum.. lol and David as usual brings up a good and valid point when you start looking at species the major aquariums are turning down... curiose to know why they are considering most don't have issues houseing Orcas... just saying

and yes footprint is huge for rays.. but nobody's even asked what your footprint is going to be... just that you can't or shouldn't house it. think last year it was RTC's or Pimas that where to big for private ownership... Now seems they are all over the place if you know where to look.

and as far as brown rays go.. i still think tigers or flowers are the way to go if you want somehting other then a motoro that gets bigger then retics and hystrix... though a group of like 20 hystrix would be pretty cool to see interact in such a large space.

when you have an olympic swimming pool size aquarium available for one let me know. Until then I still suggest its not a good idea..whether you are allowed to keep one is besides the point..... I have kept groups of adult sized Tigers....Brachyura make those look like tadpoles.
I have tried to import them. I could get a minimum of 10. I needed to place the other 8 (at cost price) and STILL I was turned down by several international aquariums that BUY other rays from me!...I can only wonder why.... I guess nothing to do with getting to be up to 1000lbs or 7' across or eating 3 cows and an elephant each day probably?
B's are also thought to be at least partly migratory, another problem that is impossible to deal with in an aq. Very little is known about them.
