Easier said than done with regard to interfering with these males pestering big females.
They require so much space that it's almost impossible to give them a fair portion of tank and also the remaining group a fair portion of tank, many will view photos and videos but to see a female of this size in the flesh is something else, you're always aware of the difficulty of dividing, securing a divider across a 6' span against such large fish who are powerful is not easy, I recently had to repair a broken down divider where a male again attacked the weak female stressing her to not feed again.
You're always hoping the male will give up or get the job done and leave her alone, I fully understand how you could have not stepped in.
Sorry for your loss.

Very sad news Richard.

Its an awful feeling losing a very large ray that you have had a while not to mention grown on, its the growing them on from tea cup size to what they are today that hurts the most.

I think my main worry is now the big girls gone they may start on the next female

I'm beginning to think the best way would be a tank with 2 males and the tank with females then put a male in with the females for a few weeks then keep swapping the males over

This is my intention with the Hystrix group. I have a single male who is a sex pest already but the girls are no where near breeding size/age.

He will be kept in solitary confinement and either take a female to him or vice versa.

He has been pretty intensive with his attacks to the point I sectioned one female as she was not very happy and clearly chewed all the way round and stressed.

Really sorry to here your sad news Richard, strange u should say that as me and mike was talking about the same thing, my male pearl has done a real job on my big girl pearl and not for the first time. Seems sum males just don't take no for a answer and the poor girls take a real hammering.
Think keeping the males separate is definitely the way to go.

I know in the past people me included have said its best to have more females to spread aggression but this wasn't the case as I had 5 females yet both males went for the same female and she was far from a easy target

To be honest I have never had this problem in the past and both females have been able to shake off any male that pestered them to much They even killed my last bigger male p14
The only thing I can think of is they could shake off a male of simulate size but smaller males are harder to shake off
