Pacu Dilemma

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
welcome to mfk! you will need to rehome all of your pacu like everyone else are saying-they really arent tank fish. i wish petstores would stop selling them-dont get me wrong, i love pacu but most ppl dont know what they are getting into when buying them

put them on craigslist too.. and look for ppl who have ponds that they heat in cooler weather.. i wouldnt look to rehome them in aquariums unless its a massive tank and i doubt ppl have that... but this site is the right place to put them.

id shoot for a pond keeper in youre area- best of luck to you and your pacus!

Thank you all! As of today, they are ALL rehomed! A man has SEVERAL fish tanks to keep them. He's got a 225g for the pacu, and another for his 2 Oscar & now mine, and a 3rd for the pleco & something else he's got! Talk about a lucky find!!! I feel much better they're in a good place! Thanks everyone!

I'll be looking for suggestions on smaller schools now, that can co-habitate in a 55g with no worries...

theres tons of options now. you can go with schools smaller community fish, groups of smaller africans, groups of some dwarf cichlids....even in a 55g your options are near endless.

We really want a variety of small schools with lots of color, maybe 5 different schools? I feel like I've hit the jackpot with the knowledge that lies in this forum! Any suggestions are much appreciated. We will maintain a fresh water aquarium, and would like as many fish as possible, keeping it clean & size appropriate. Thanks for the help!

Wow. I just realized what I had was Red Belly Pirahnas. I feel terrible that I didn't know that when I gave them a new home. Now that I see the work someone on here did showing the differences, it's clear to me...oops

It's okay, KLD. No matter, they still won't fit in a 55g.

well thats great! but 3 pacus will outgrow a 225 gallon tank in time.. hope he can upgrade.

I would give away all Pacus and Keep the oscar and buy one more oscar so they have a pair i would turn off the lights more often since thats a big contributer to algae growth, is the tank near a window where there is a lot of sunlight that is also a big contributer. Good Luck Algae is a PAIN!

Wow! Yes, it wasn't near a window, but it didn't look right where it was. Light comes in, but no direct sunlight comes in that window. Is that okay? Man, I was keeping the lights on 24/7 once the algae hit b/c I was afraid they wouldn't be able to see otherwise! I made it worse! Our tank is empty now. We put EVERYTHING in the tub to give it a thorough cleaning & start over. What a waste of water & chemicals! I'm just glad the fish are out & in clear water now.

I'm excited to start over with fish that won't outgrow the tank. I hear a lot about cichlids. I'm still open to more input on what fish (upstate NY) I could put in there to get the most color & the most fish. Thanks again!
