There are two of them..8 years old in a 220gal..next month or so they will be in a 500gal.. they are sweet..as you can see they have a baby:D it is an african cichlid and he has been with them for the past 8 months.. They are gentle giants, very seldom do they get excited about anything.. but they do love to play and make a few waves here and there.. but thankfully not often..ususally when i feed them one{bigger one races the smaller one to get to the food first} i have mastered the art of feeding by throwing in some on one side at the same time as i throw it in on the other side .. so everybody get there share.. sometimes the african will go right up to their mouth to grab the food first and they will back off and let him have it..they actually care about him.. he flanks by their side and belly ..actually the african is starting to look like them..with his extra rolls of fatty skin..they eat carrots cut up small..they chew them, grapes cut in half and zukes blanched in microwave, bananas and pellets.. hope that helps with some info..:D Also i have seen some pacu eat feeders..they love to eat so they will eat them.. mine never eat any live fish..train them to eat their veggies and they are happy.

Great info on the Pacus, they ve got cute looks. Am keeping a few of them starting at the 2" size since oct 2007. Rather shy at the moment. Likes to hide among the rocks and stuff. BTW what are the sizes/thickness of the tank that you are using. I am planning to
move them to a 200g tank when they reach 6" and then to a garden pond when they exceed 12".

JUst wanted to let you know alot has happened since you started this thread..i lost my beloved pacu in a tank explosion.we suspect a wire had an ark in it under their tank and the heat caused the tank to explode..my pacu did not make it.. but the african cichlid {their baby} was saved, i miss them.. theres nothing like those happy clown faces but i am thank ful no one else was lost and i did have them 8 years..
Try and get baby pics of yours just so you have them..it always amazed me seeing mine as tiny 2 inchers and then again at 30 inches.. and all the pics in all the growth stages..

I to love my Pacu, I fed him and his oscar buddies half my breakfast this morning. He loves his apple slices and consequently so do the oscars. A well kept and cared for Pacu isnt flighty...mine has never had a mad dash around the tank he is quite calm and content. He will occasionally knock over some of my ill placed driftwood and hes uprooted a plant maybe once. Mine looks like a smaller version of Liz's Pacus there, he lost his red coloring probably around the 10" mark....hes about 12" so he has a bit of orangy yellow left but for the most part hes black with a lighter belly.

Since my plans have changed in the job market and Ill be at home for another year or two, Ive started looking into a smaller tank to accomodate Brutus the pacu until I do move out and can get something larger than a 6ft tank. The small LFS in my town had a tank ordered for somebody with a snake....it was a 225G Perfecto tank 6ft long 30" wide and 24" tall. That would definatly carry him well into the 24-26" range. My 150 is fortunatly a custom size and 20" wide so Im expecting it will last him atleast another year-year and a half :)

I do agree how a fish can change so much. I have a few old 35mm photos of my Pacu, he was originally purchased at a bit less than 1" he looked more like an odd tetra than a Pacu, I personally acquired him at around 3" or so I believe and even then he has changed dramatically :)

so sorry about the pacu. I started this pacu stuff since i read that it's more like a doggie in the water kinda of . And since starting i do agree they grow on you and now once in a while will just sit there looking back. The few i have are just starting to come around during feeding time. They re now about 4" grows very fast lol. in only 2 months.

Attached 2 small photo of the little pacus. The ones that could be seen.

You can judge the size of the pacu from the little goldfish under the other water lily leaf.
Still very small and as can be seen have provide plenty of hiding areas for them according to what have been suggest by other pacu keepers.
