PACU

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
We love our pacu. They really are dog-like in behavior--seeking attention, pushing each other out of the way to be petted. They watch us all the time. Sometimes it seems like they're thinking, "why do we have to be in this tank?"

After Liz posted that she had fed her pacu potato slices, we tried it. They went crazy over the potato. Leonardo managed to suck in a whole slice that got rolled up. He was swimming around with a potato "cigarrette" stuck in his mouth. He looked so comical. Didn't know if I'd have to do the Heimlich Manuever on him! I ran and got my camera. Here's the end of the feeding. It is very evident that they have very big personalities. Leonardo is quite a rascal who always makes eye contact with us. You will notice the missing scales on Adonis. These big boys have vivid imaginations and sometimes freak out and go berserk as they try to escape from an imagined predator. Even in the bare tank they manage to cut and scrape themselves by hurling themselves into the tank lids as they attempt to escape from an unseen monster. One big crash into a wall or a lid, and they come back to reality and become jolly jovial giants again. In this video, Adonis gets the best of Leonardo the bully, but Leonardo gets the last potato chip.:)

That a nice healthy looking one craig. the background blend well with the gravel. would u like to share with us what is your setup for this particular tank. size, filteration, feeding regime etc. as i am still learning how to keep up with the ones i have. thanks in advance. cheers.

Love the pic and illustration pacu mom. Hope that mine would just be as entertaining when they grow. may have to get a dog bone ready soon lol!

Fraser the pond is not ready at the moment as the pacu's are still in the nusery tanks which are only 4' by 2' in size. will probably move them at the end of this month to a cement one of 8' by 3' with a water depth of 2-3'. Will take some shots then. I am still reading up on the pacus from the various sites on the internet. Found that MFK have quite a number of articles but it's a pain to run around the various forums using the search tool. but it was quite fun as there were other interesting items on the way as well.

Will probably do a more detail write on the pacu's after more experience. till then cheers.

The water lily you saw in the posting was just baby ones taken from a bigger pond at my neighbour place. they re all in the same 4'by 2' wide tank as part of the deco.

Hi all, so if pacus like potato I guess then the "small pacus" big silver dollars would probably like them too?

Just wanted to say that as hard as it was to watch your video i was glad i did.. yours are so much like mine were and i miss those silly smiles so much...pacus were always happy and although it breaks my heart that they are gone it gives me great pleasure to know other pacu's have great owners who love them..only pacu people can understand how they touch our heart.. great video... and i am glad they love their potatoes..I love all my fish very much but my pacus made my fishkeeping a joy... a real experience ..always something to see and notice.. they were so interesting and funny and bigger then life..

Liz,
I'm really sick that yours died so tragically. Yours really were an inspiration to me...that they can live in a smaller tank (less than 1000 gallons) with good water parameters.
