Painting a 3D background, is it possible ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Since you would use something thin, I am thinking plastic clip to clamp down to the background at the top edges. Does pvc run through into the background? You could drill hole and extend the PVC as needed and run through the cover. I think it's doable and reversable if you wanted. Magnets could work but too as mentioned but two things to think through 1) the background isn't flat so you'd have to ensure two magnets can touch. 2) You would have to glue magnets to background...but you dididn't like it anyway.

I think it could look very clean...just cannot suggest specifically around plumbing without seeing it as i dont remember how yours run over / through the tank?

All the plumbing is in the overflows. I just realized theres nothing to clip it to. The top wouldnt allow for it. I think the pond armor would look better, but i like this idea as a test run. Should be relatively cheap to do and i can probably get it to hold with magnets. If i dont like the look i can just take it down the pond armor is permanent. Any ideas on what i should use ? I was thinking poly carb sheets butt they wont sink easily

Do you have a Tap Plastics or equivalent? Thin marine board may cost less, safe for fish and sturdy.

Have you used this?

You may be right about pond armor. I've not seen first hands in an aquarium but could look good on the background now black.

Pond armor in black is just shinny black. It would look like acrylic. Only thing is tank will need to be shut down to do it. I think depending on how you attach the cover you could allow the tank to continue to run.

We're moving in june. Fish are gonna be in bins for a few days. Initially i was going to get the tank set up the night we move in but its never gonna happen. I think it'll be easier if i get another 75 gal and split them up into two tanks for a week or so while im doing the "wife chores". I could slap the pond armor on then.

Really ? I miss black. They looked soo much better. Kong yoh're old congi and the koloton with a black backround.

They dont always lighten up but there patterns/color arent as stable as before. I guess the solid background makes a diff. I could see blue making them pop too

I understand the whole getting bored with something you are use to seeing every day, but I honestly think it looks great the way it is. Anyone can have a black background, a nice 3d background is next level. Just had to put that out there :) now with that said...

You have two ways you can make it black. One is the paint it with a plastic safe spray paint like Fusion then seal it for durability. You already said you don't want to spray it, plus to seal it you'll be using pond armor, so you might as well just cut out the middle man and do black pond armor right off the bat.

Pond armor will dry basically in 12 hours give or take a few hours. You'll want to thin it a little bit when you mix it, and only mix enough to do about half the BG, then mix another batch and do the other half because it starts sitting up rather quickly. Might end up taking two coats to cover fully since your applying it on a vertical panel. When I do my 3D background I can get away one one heavy coat but that's because they are laying flat.

After it cures let it sit for a day then fill the tank and drain it to flush it well and you should be good to go.

Again though, make sure thats what you really want, because your tank looks great the way it is IMO.
