Pale, Gasping Black Arowana

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok, he didn't eat today, but he stuffed himself full during the last feeding. If you've ever seen an oscar eat so much that food is hanging out of it's mouth and it's gasping, that's what it looks like.

Could he have tried to eat too big of a piece of shrimp during the last feeding and injure himself?

I guessed that earlier, that it ate something tough to swallow.

but would that go on for a couple of days?

I'm nervous! LOL

I remember reading on here of another that had a problem with his arowana. The fish wouldn't open its mouth at all, and when he took it out of the tank and forced the mouth open it had a piece of shrimp lodged in there when he removed it, it went back to normal.
Sounds like it could be a simular thing and its stuck in his throat. I would keep an eye on him.
Maybe its a chicken bone.

I'll keep that in mind. I hope I don't have to do that, but we'll see what happens.

Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.

My 17" silver has been doing the same since I moved it to the 180g 5-6 weeks ago. But still eats well. Also has been bitting it 's own tail. Otherwise seems quite healthy. I have tried floating plants and increased/decreased current but have seen no change in behavior.

Maybe it's seasonal. I think I remember this time last year he didn't eat as much...........strange. (I'm really going out on a limb here)

possibly a female?? I know it's to small to breed but maybe like you said it's seasonal an she's in "heat" per say?? I think I would maybe lower the temp to 80F. cooler water will slow her metabolism and hold more O2. Just a thought. If it were me I would also add 1 tablespoon of salt per 10gals and see if it helps. Keep us updated!! Don't want you to loose your blacky
