Maverick, wels will do well in SE Asia waters. They are growing into monsters in the warmer waters of Spain. My wels did excellent during the summer.............it got to 100 degrees outside but the stock tank it was in got up to 86 degrees and the Wels did good and was much hungrier :D :D

They are coldwater fish but they can live in warm water, look at the Wels in Spain, they are growing massive in warmer waters.

Don't meen to hi-jack this thread, but from what i've seen the warmer the water the bigger and faster wels will grow. All the UK wels in cold water don't get anywhere near the size of the warmer ones in Spain and Italy.

It would be interesting to see what would happen with one in a pond like that in Asia and one here in the UK in a similar pond starting from the same size with the same parent fish then monitor the difference in growth rate betwen the 2.

Hmmm really? I always thought that we were a bit too close to the equator for the wels. Well probably that belief was due to this store's refusal to stock them (and they had three fillamentosums for sale once)...

Send a couple this way, I'll see what I can do with them. I'll even increase the size of my pond just for that one species. I need more monsters! Id like to see how it would do now.... and compare it to the Giant Cat over here.

Wallago leerii was introduced in Malay Peninsular Malaysia and W.micropogon was introduced to Thailand , Laos and others.Genus Pangasius was seperated into species by characteristics of tooth patch and swimblader and ventral view of head. Now this genus can hybrid also.

If your store had filamentosums, beg them to get you wels as well. They will do fine trust me.

Start a new pond and only stock it with some of the bigger cats like:

filamentosum aka piraiba
wels cat
RTC
Paroon or mekong
jau <---I hear they are vicious towards tankmates.
Bagarius yarelli
Wallago attu or leeri

Can you imagine a pond with just those cats? It would be nuts and as they get larger, maybe unsafe :D :D

yep, definately Unsafe. I shudder to imagine what would happen to me if I fell in there.

Actually if I had the Piraiba, I'd make a moat instead and include a drawbridge also :D:D:D:D

I want to keep a Jau in the pond though, but yeah I know they are vicious towards the tankmates. That LFS has 4 Jau for sale at the moment, and B. Tigirnum right now.

get a filamentosum instead of a jau. Jau are just nasty. Heck, they attack each other! Plus filamentosum look better and get bigger :D :D

I think if you got a wels, you would fall in love with it. Check this video out:

Tell me what you think now :) :)

Plus I guess the warm water speeds up the metabolism of the Wels. Now that I think of it, those caught by the Russian trawlers must be VERY VERY old.

what catfish caught by russian trawlers?
