it could be rotten matter under the tank.. mostly likely poop.. thanks for sharing your story..
and hope u dont give up after this tragic experience..
I recommend a clear bottom or only a thin layer of gravel in your tank...
Yes, normally i am a fan of clear bottom with no gravel. After my father's insistence i have added a think layer of black gravel in one of the set-ups (which i am in the process of removing with each WC)
This particular set-up had a UGF. The aros were in it for like ten days, and i did a water change in between already.
As for the rotten matter, how come ammonia, nitrite readings were negative and nitrate reading was not unusual? That is what kiling me

the limestone may have had something to do with it. i know it does something to water. forgot what...ph..kh..something-h. the brown water looks unhealthy.
what are those water bottles for in the first picture? did you use that water into the tub? and there's no filter in the tub...
but regardless, sorry for the loss. if i were you i would still be kneeling by the aros in shock.
The water bottles are for water changes (i could not find the bucket in the house). Was i supposed to have a filter in the hospital tank? i only had two airstones. I did not feed the fish and i did a daily water change.
hmmm, limestone is base and it does used to buffer acidity. But if the water is not acid then it should not affect the ph. ... or does it? I used limestone because it was abundant on my construction site in crushed form... the black gravel for other aquarium i bought from LFS

It could have been a nitrite schock.
The white stuff coming out of them points me to a parasitic infection.....
Lets wait for more opinions....
Not nitirite shock for sure (unless it happened in hospital tank). The nitrite reading was less than 0.2 when the fish were gasping and losing scales (black was not affected in original tank besides a little fading).
Infection is what i am thinking about, but how? i had the small fishes for ages... the only think i can think of is the food going hairy quite quickly in this set-up, when i removed uneaten stuff - but i did not make anything of it.
The clear thread that was hanging out of the HBRTG was fairlong .... 5" at least (looked like a thin clear poo)

You could be right, Anchor Worms maybe?
I understood that anchor worms are underscales? IS anyone aware of internal parasites for arowana or other fish (small barbs, neons etc) ... i did not have the heart to cut up the aros to see the insides =(

WOW! I'm very sorry.
Well, I would never use an UGF, especially with arowanas, because of all the detritus that builds under the trays(which I'm assuming is what the brown stuff is) but at the same time your nitrates were only .2, so I'm a little confused as to what the cause of their death was.
Talking about lesson learned (the hard and expensive way) - i am not going to be using UGF either. i did do the vacuuming and stuff did come out of the gravel ... obviously a small percentage only. But i shouda seen some signs of distress before i left after christmas!!!! they arrived on 19 and i was home until 26 (with a water change in between)! if the water was that bad then they shoulda showed some signs then!!
Nitrites were less than 0.2. Nitrate reading was very low (between yellow and orange - but not yet orange) ...lower than my silver aro tank i can tell you that much (the solution did not change color from yellow at all)

Id say its the black stuff under the gravel. Most likely, that was leftover stuff rotting or fish waste, but either way, it was probably polluting your water. And limestone helps neutralize acidic waters and raises the PH.
I would agree ... except how did the black stuff contribute to their deaths? ammonia and nitrite reading were negative while nitrate reading were not all that bad...unless there are other chemicals that can build up - and even so, they aros were fine for five days and eating what would trigger such a bad reactions.

Oh, gosh, I'm so sorry for your loss.

Thank you guys for your kind word and support. I will trying out this combination again later in March 09 ... for now i am concentrating on the surviving red, blue and x-back. Blue eats really little but still eats daily. X-back and L600 eat like a pig .... red is somewhere in between....they are still puffing at each other
