hey everyone,
im new here but ive been keeping fish for about 4 years now and i was wondering about keeping payara (hydrolycus armatus). i have an empty 55 gallon tank 40x20x13 and im hoping to get some payara. i just have a few questions because ive never kept payara before and they look bad ass!!

How many should i keep in a 55 gallon tank?
could i mix them with oscars?
what would you reccomend feeding them?( i was thinking feeder shrimp and as they get bigger maybe larger feeder fish)
any other tips or suggestions on payara fish will be greatly appreciated

yup, 55 is way too small for one of these guys. I have a 100g and I dont even wanna get one yet until I upgrade to something bigger

if you want monster fish, I would seriously consider getting rid of the 55 and getting at least a 75. IDK if it's a possibliity or not for you, but 55's just aren't able to hold that much. i mean, there are tons of things that can go in a 55, but most monsters are going to need at least a 75. the 12" width of the 55 really limits larger fish. how much were the "armutus" and what size were they? you should try to get all aquarium fish off live as soon as possible, imo

armatus in a 55g is a def. no.
youcould probably keep a tat or scomb in a 55 for a while.
since they grow sssooo slow.

also have you actually found one and looked at the price???
