Actually, peacock bass were introduced to Florida by the fish and wildlife to keep the other non natives such as tilapia in check so they won't overpopulate the canals, lakes, etc. I believe.

they were introduced here in SGP as well.
for fishing.:D

There are differences that you can and cant see that separate PBass from Bass. One you can see is that Cichlids have one Nostril on each side of the head and the one you cant see is that cichlids small intestine exits the stomach on the left an all other fish it exits on the right. 2 other physical characteristics that separate PBass and LMB are Nuchal hump and the pharyngeal jaws.

Well, thank you!:)

Wow!! I really thought this thread was a joke

Tell me everyone is not really confused by the COMMON name of a fish . That is why common names are really mis leading.

Certainly an interesting topic :D

Personally, i can see peacocks being reclassified in the coming years. Their evolution has taken them pretty far from the original cichlid blueprint.

But, for the mean time, it seems that they are infact cichlids eh? (went away and did some research :) )

How so? Just from physical appearances? If that were the case then Angelfish should defiantly be reclassified what other cichlid looks like them? The streamlined large-mouthed large bodied cichlid template isn't just the domain of Cichla in the Cichlidae family, look over at Africa in Lake Malawi other species like Fostochromas rostratus, Aristochromis christyi, Champsochromis caeruleus, Tyrannochromis macrostoma,Serranochromis robustus, Lichnochromis acuticeps all have that template. Same goes for Lake Tanganyika with the big daddy Boulengerochromis microlepis (Emperor Cichlid) which is considered the largest Cichlid at 36".

i think you guys should leave this stuff to people who are qualified, pbass are cichlids look at vieja and parachromis they dont look similar at all they are both cichlids, it doesnt all boil down to the appearance theres a lot more to it
